Acorn TV's November Lineup + This Week in British TV

We'll make this a quick one - just an update about what's coming this week, the new Acorn TV lineup for November, and a few spooky recommendations.

What we're...

  • Watching: Travels by Narrowboat - This is one of those lovely "background shows" where you can just leave it on as you do other things, occasionally checking in to watch a particularly scenic or interesting bit. As I was putting together a post on Acorn TV's November schedule, I saw they were adding a new narrowboat series later in the month, and it inspired a re-watch of this fun series. Cruising the Cut and Great Canal Journeys are also great if you like this one.
  • Reading: A Curtain Twitcher's Book of Murder by Gay Marris - This one is a bit like Midsomer Murders - not in setting, but in the sort of British quaintness paired with surreal and excessive murders. On Atbara Avenue in 1968 London, beneath the surface of suburban normalcy, secrets and tensions unravel as murder becomes a disturbingly common solution.

November 2024 Acorn TV Schedule - A lot of the November schedule is made up of continuing series - but crime fans can look forward to the premiere of Inspector Ellis.

Cadbury Heroes Tub - Though I'm not a fan of really cold winters, I DO love when the weather gets cold enough that I can safely order British chocolate and know it won't arrive melted.

How Whitby Inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula - Most horror fans are familiar with Dracula's connections to Transylvania, but fewer know that Bram Stoker took inspiration from a trip to a lovely seaside town in Yorkshire...

Spooky Recommendations

  • Being Human (UK) - Before the American version, there was a British version. In the show, a werewolf, vampire, and ghost live together as roommates. It doesn't always go smoothly.
  • The Stone Tape - This sublimely creepy film follows a team of scientists who move into a haunted Victorian mansion. Their efforts focus on figuring out whether the stones of the building are acting as a recording medium for past events (a "stone tape"), and they accidentally unleash something quite sinister.
  • Chiller - This ghostly anthology series features big name British actors in a variety of self-contained tales. Features Martin Clunes, Nigel Havers, and Sophie Ward, among others.
  • A Ghost Story for Christmas - Yes, these haunted tales were originally intended for Christmas - but there's nothing wrong with enjoying them whenever you please.
  • Midwinter of the Spirit - Country Vicar Merrily Watkins consults on a murder investigation and gets on-the-job training in exorcism.
  • The Devil's Hour - Each night, Lucy Chambers has terrifying visions before waking at exactly 3:33am. At the same time, mysterious happenings plague her household. Her young son is withdrawn and exhibits a flat affect, her mother speaks to empty chairs, and her house seems to be inhabited by something otherworldly. When a string of brutal murders occur in the area, she's pulled into the investigation - and it becomes clear these things might all be connected.
  • Thriller - Like Chiller, this is an anthology series full of spooky (but not too gruesome) tales. A number of American actors played guest roles, along with quite a few British actors who would later become famous (including Michael Kitchen, Hayley Mills, Jenny Agutter, Francesca Annis, and Helen Mirren).
  • Apparitions - Martin Shaw stars in this series about a priest who's drawn into the darker side of good and evil.

One should always disagree with everyone about everything on principle. Conflict is what keeps you alive.

Happy New Year's Eve! We hope you all have a safe and pleasant evening, whether that means time with friends and family or staying in alone with a good book or TV series. Fun Fact: While this won't be news to any of the most die-hard Anglophiles, the Scots word for the last day of the year is Hogmanay. In modern day Scotland, these celebrations can get quite large, with events carrying on for a few days (though sadly, some events were cancelled this year due to extreme weather). If you're...

Welcome back! If you're a Christmas person, we hope you had a lovely one - and Happy Hanukkah to those who are observing the holiday. Five years ago today, Dial M for Middlesbrough premiered on Gold in the UK, the third entry in a series of comedy-drama films starring Johnny Vegas and Sian Gibson as a couple of tour guides who are constantly getting mixed up in murders. Prior to that, Murder on the Blackpool Express and Death on the Tyne aired, also in the winter season. A TV series, Murder, They Hope, came after that, followed by a second season that never made it to BritBox. In 2023, there was a Christmas special called...
