What we're...
- Watching: The Sniffer - Though I've seen a few Russian films over the years, this is the first Russian detective series I've tried - and it's a fun one. It follows a detective who uses his keen sense of smell to help solve mysteries (and if you like it, there are 4 seasons available to enjoy).
- Reading: We Solve Murders by Richard Osman - There's no new Thursday Murder Club book this year, and that's because Richard Osman decided to try writing a new series. Released last week, it pairs a young woman in private security with her ex-detective father-in-law as they work to solve a murder on a remote island paradise. The best part? If you get the audiobook version, it's read by Unforgotten and Annika star Nicola Walker.
Acorn TV's October 2024 Lineup - A Candice Renoir Halloween special? Yes, that's exactly what you're seeing in the photo above - and what you can look forward to on Acorn TV next month (along with a new season of Whitstable Pearl and plenty more!)

In the Pipeline...
Most of these shows and movies are still too far off to have premiere dates, but if you're the kind of person who keeps a British TV notebook/journal, you may want to take notes.
- Earl Grey - This upcoming feature film will tell the story of a French girl living in London who, on the day of her 23rd birthday, allows herself 24 hours before ending her life; until she meets an enigmatic stranger.
- Joe - This upcoming BBC One series centers around the Mitchell family who are dealing with the devastating aftermath of an act of abuse, and the knowledge that it was perpetrated by a member of their own family who, after serving his sentence, has just been released from prison. Cast members include Anna Friel, Bobby Schofield, Anna Maxwell Martin, and David Threlfall.
- Secret Service - This upcoming ITV series follows senior MI6 officer, Kate Henderson, whose life seems pretty ordinary unless you know her real job is heading up the Russia Desk of the Secret Intelligence Service. When her undercover operations reveal alarming evidence that a senior UK politician is possibly a high-level Russian asset, Kate is in a race against time to uncover their identity.
- Betrayal - Shaun Evans (Endeavour) will star as an MI5 operative in this upcoming ITV series. His character, John Hughes, joined up during the war on terror and was at the forefront of averting the biggest terrorist plots on UK soil. Now in his mid 40s and married with two children he’s struggling to adapt to the new MI5, where threats to national security have changed and he’s forced to adapt to the values of a progressive work environment.
The Wives
If you're a fan of Shakespeare & Hathaway and The Madame Blanc Mysteries, you'll definitely want to check out The Wives when it makes it over to the US (no word yet on dates/service). The series premiered last week in the UK, and it follows a group of extended family members who've convened at their favourite holiday spot in Malta in the aftermath of a death in the family.
What should be a lovely family trip full of closeness and healing ends up being a strained trip full of secrets, lies, and tension. Cast members include Jo Joyner (Shakespeare & Hathaway), Angela Griffin (Lewis), Tamzin Outhwaite (New Tricks), and Jamie Bamber (Beyond Paradise). You can check out the trailer below.
I wish I could tell you how lonely I am. How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell and it's white, it's snow-white.
