Today marks the US premiere of the brand-new Rebus adaptation - and it's a binge premiere. I know a lot of people have been disappointed it's only on ViaPlay, but the good news is that Amazon offers a free 7-day trial HERE, and they have a ton of other great shows (mostly Scandinavian) that most non-ViaPlay subscribers probably won't have seen.
The Edinburgh-based series follows a slightly younger Rebus (played by Richard Rankin) as he investigates a criminal conflict that turns surprisingly personal when he finds his brother mixed up in it.
What we're...
- Watching: Made of Money with Brian Cox - This two-part docuseries sees the Scottish actor looking at the worlds of the haves and the have-nots. He revisits his childhood home of Dundee, Scotland, reflecting on the contrast between his working class upbringing and the wealth that has surrounded him in some of his more recent US acting roles.
- Reading: Bad Times by Mark Yarwood - I happened upon Mark Yarwood in a Facebook group, and since I'm a sucker for coastal crime novels, it took all of 2 seconds for me to pony up the 99 cents (price at time of writing) for this one - especially knowing Yarwood was a writer for the Channel 4 series Smack the Pony. DCI Peter Moone is a former London detective who's transferred to Devon & Cornwall Police but remains haunted by a case from the past. He lives in a caravan by the sea, and the first book sees him investigating a case that involves a missing child and a grisly murder.

Throwback Thursday...
These shows may be a bit older, but that doesn't mean they're not enjoyable - and some are like stepping inside a time machine.
- That's My Boy - Mollie Sugden (Are You Being Served?) stars alongside Christopher Blake (Young Charlie Chaplin) in this lovely comedy about a woman who suddenly finds herself working for the son she gave up for adoption many years earlier.
- To the Manor Born - This hysterical social class comedy follows the snobby Audrey fforbes-Hamilton (Dame Penelope Keith) after she's booted from her stately home after her husband dies. When the nouveau riche Richard DeVere (Peter Bowles) moves in, sparks fly.
- Rumpole of the Bailey - Leo McKern stars as a sharp-witted barrister who defends all sorts of interesting clients at London’s Old Bailey, delighting in challenging authority and delivering justice with humour.
- Yes Minister - Paul Eddington (The Good Life) stars as a well-meaning but often clueless British cabinet minister whose plans are constantly undermined by his wily, agenda-driven civil servant, played by Nigel Hawthorne (Mapp & Lucia).
- Only When I Laugh - James Bolam, Peter Bowles, and Christohper Strauli star as three hospital patients who are constantly vying to be the sickest of their little group.
- Please Sir! - This classic British sitcom follows a young and idealistic teacher who is constantly challenged by his difficult students.
- Upstairs, Downstairs - Before there was Downton Abbey, there was Upstairs, Downstairs - a classic series about the lives of the aristocratic Bellamy family and their loyal servants.
Plans are meant to be broken. That's when we have the most fun.
