BritBox US October Lineup + Under-the-Radar British Shows

In this email...

  • We look at BritBox's upcoming October US schedule
  • A quick look at what's new and immediately upcoming on various US streaming services
  • We look at a handful of under-the-radar British TV shows most fans won't have seen

What we're...

  • Watching: Moonflower Murders - This follow-up to Magpie Murders finds Susan Ryeland in Crete, her life once again disrupted by events related to Atticus Pund.
    • Side note: Anthony Horowitz has a third Susan Ryeland book, Marble Hall Murders, coming next year. It's available to pre-order HERE, but I don't recommend reading the description unless you've already finished either the book or TV version of the other two.
  • Reading: The Mystery of the Crooked Man by Tom Spencer - Archivist Agatha Dorn discovers a lost manuscript by Golden Age mystery novelist Gladden Green (who sounds quite similar to Agatha Christie), but when the manuscript is found to be a hoax and her ex-lover turns up dead with a scrap of it near her body, she realises something is amiss. It's available for pre-order in the US, but you can use the "used" option on Amazon or to go Amazon UK to get a copy sooner if you like the sound of it.

BritBox (US) Schedule for October 2024 - The October lineup includes a couple new crime/thriller offerings, several classics, and the new (but sadly, final) season of Inside No 9.

19 Delightful British Films Starring Older Women - Older women are one of the single most underrepresented groups on screen (with respect to their numbers in real life), so in this post we take a look at some of the wonderful films that place them centre stage.

Emma Bridgewater Union Jack Mug - Handcrafted in Stoke-on-Trent, Emma Bridgewater mugs are uniquely British and lovely - and every Anglophile should have at least one or two at home.

Under-the-Radar Gems

Looking for something a little different? Below, we've featured a handful of titles you may not have considered.

  • Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - Set during the early 19th century, this fantasy-drama features an alternative version of England in which magic powers have vanished and two men hold the key to bringing it back.
  • Hotel Babylon - Based on the novel of the same name by Imogen Edwards-Jones, this fun drama follows the lives of workers at a five-star hotel. My only caution is that season 4 ends on a cliffhanger, so that's a bit annoying but not really worth missing out on 4 seasons of otherwise enjoyable programming to avoid.
  • The Smoking Room - Filmed during an era where people were permitted to smoke indoors, this sitcom takes place in the smoking room of a fictitious company. Robert Webb (Peep Show, Back) stars.
  • Truth Seekers - Sadly cancelled after just one season, this 2020 series follows a pair of ghost hunters as they begin to uncover a conspiracy that threatens the entire human race. Starring Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead).
  • Cambridge Spies - This four-part drama is backed with British acting talent, including Tom Hollander (Rev), Toby Stephens (Alex Rider), Samuel West (All Creatures Great & Small), Rupert Penry-Jones (Whitechapel), Anthony Andrews (Brideshead Revisited), Imelda Staunton (Flesh & Blood), and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock). It's based on the true story four young men at Cambridge who were recruited to spy for the Soviet Union.

Because, a camera is a mechanical device which records a moment in time, but not what that moment means or the emotions that it evokes. Whereas, a painting, however imperfect it may be, is an expression of... feeling. An expression of love. Not just a copy of something.

Charles Ryder, Brideshead Revisited

Happy New Year's Eve! We hope you all have a safe and pleasant evening, whether that means time with friends and family or staying in alone with a good book or TV series. Fun Fact: While this won't be news to any of the most die-hard Anglophiles, the Scots word for the last day of the year is Hogmanay. In modern day Scotland, these celebrations can get quite large, with events carrying on for a few days (though sadly, some events were cancelled this year due to extreme weather). If you're...

Welcome back! If you're a Christmas person, we hope you had a lovely one - and Happy Hanukkah to those who are observing the holiday. Now that Christmas has passed, a number of new holiday specials have become available to North American audiences. To make sure you haven't missed any, we'll take a look at the specials that have come to the US so far, along with the ones that will be premiering in the US over the coming days (most, but not all, are also available on the same services in...

Five years ago today, Dial M for Middlesbrough premiered on Gold in the UK, the third entry in a series of comedy-drama films starring Johnny Vegas and Sian Gibson as a couple of tour guides who are constantly getting mixed up in murders. Prior to that, Murder on the Blackpool Express and Death on the Tyne aired, also in the winter season. A TV series, Murder, They Hope, came after that, followed by a second season that never made it to BritBox. In 2023, there was a Christmas special called...
