British Films Featuring Older Women + New British TV This Week

In this email...

  • We look at a load of British films where women over 60 play leading roles
  • A quick look at what's new and immediately upcoming on various US streaming services
  • A look at some of the British TV shows currently in production

What we're...

  • Watching: Van der Valk - With season 4 coming to PBS next weekend, it's a good time to catch up or rewatch old episodes ahead of the new ones.
  • Reading: The Dark Wives by Ann Cleeves - This is the 11th book in the Vera Stanhope series and it involves the murder of a staff member at a home for troubled teens.

19 Delightful British Films Starring Older Women - Older women are one of the single most underrepresented groups on screen (with respect to their numbers in real life), so in this post we take a look at some of the wonderful films that place them centre stage.

New & Upcoming

  • On BritBox, the 2nd of September brought season 1 of the comedy Man Down (with more seasons on the 9th, 16th, and 23rd). On the 4th, true crime drama Des premiered, followed by season 2 of Trigger Point on the 5th and Charles III: The Coronation Year on the 6th. On the 10th, they'll add Forensics: The Real CSI, season 1.
  • On Acorn TV, September 2nd brought a new episode of Under the Vines, along with the light Australian ghost drama Spirited and the 2010 NZ film Bloodlines. The 9th brings another new episode of Under the Vines, along with the premiere of the true crime drama The Long Shadow.
  • On Netflix, September 10th brings Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with My Father. The series sees the comedian talking about parenthood with his father.
  • On Apple TV+, season 4 of the spy thriller Slow Horses began on September 4th (two episodes premiered, followed by single episodes weekly through October 2nd).
  • On Amazon Prime Video, look for The Grand Tour: One for the Road on September 13th. This final installment sees the guys back together again and travelling across Zimbabwe in cars they always hoped to own.
  • On Roku Channel, the Irish crime drama Borderline premiered on September 1st. The odd couple detective series pairs the upright and proper DI Philip Boyd from Northern Ireland with the rough-around-the-edges DI Aoife Regan from the Republic of Ireland.

Heinz Baked Beans - British and American baked beans are NOT the same. Perfect for a full English breakfast, beans on toast, or a bean and cheese jacket potato, British baked beans are less sweet, with more emphasis on the tomato flavour.

In the Works...

A little peek at some of the British films and TV shows currently in some stage of production. It's too soon to have dates, but it can be fun to know what's ahead.

  • The Light in the Hall, Season 2 - This bilingual Welsh and English series returns to Wales to film a second season in October 2024.
  • Father Brown, Seasons 12 & 14 - This isn't NEW news, but we've had a few people ask recently so we wanted to mention that Father Brown has been renewed for seasons 12 and 13. Based on typical release patterns, we would expect to see season 12 in January 2025 and season 13 in January 2026 (but of course, that's not official).
  • Criminal Record, Season 2 - This Apple TV+ crime drama has been renewed for a second season with Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo.
  • The Donovans - This upcoming Paramount+ series has offered the following description: With the most powerful clients in Europe, The Donovans will see family fortunes and reputations at risk, odd alliances unfold, and betrayal around every corner; and while the family might be London’s most elite fixers today, the nature of their business means there is no guarantee what’s in store tomorrow. The Donovans follows two generations of gangsters, the businesses they run, the complex relationships they weave and the man they call upon to fix their problem.
  • Madame Blanc Mysteries, Season 4 - Acorn TV has announced that Sally Lindsay and her fellow cast members will be returning to Malta to film another season of this fun antiques-oriented cosy mystery.

Tell her she best interrogate me in a room with a window. I had lamb bhuna earlier that’s gonna make its presence felt.

21 years ago today (31 August 2003), ITV aired the first episode of the delightful British mystery Rosemary & Thyme. Originally created by Brian Eastman (Poirot) to entertain his garden-loving wife, it stars Felicity Kendal (The Good Life) and Pam Ferris (Where the Heart Is) as two women who create a gardening business and run into murders on nearly every job site. For three seasons, it combined gorgeous scenery, female friendship, and strangely plant-related murders - and it's a must-watch...

What a lot of people don't know, though, is how a remote Scottish island (which these days feels like an antidote to everything 1984-ish in the world) helped inspire the masterpiece. In 1947, George Orwell was on the Isle of Jura, seeking solitude and nature to help his health and make it easier to focus on writing. It was here, surrounded by the island's natural beauty and harsh conditions, that he found both the peace...
