British TV Channels on Sale (Acorn TV, BritBox, and More)

Every so often, Amazon runs a sale on channel subscriptions through their store - so if you time your memberships correctly, you can save quite a bit while enjoying some fantastic content. From now through July 17th, a number of channels are reduced to $.99/month for the first 2 months (and you can cancel online at any time from the "Memberships & Subscriptions" page of your account).

In this post, we'll take a look at which channels are currently on sale + some viewing recommendations on each.

What we're...

  • Watching: Bodkin on Netflix. There were too many May new releases to watch them all as they premiered, so we've circled back to this thriller about a group of true crime podcasters investigating a mysterious disappearance in a small Irish village.
  • Reading: The Last Dance by Mark Billingham - This new crime series by the creator of the Tom Thorne novels follows Blackpool-based detective Declan Miller, a newly-widowed man who appreciates ballroom dancing, his pet rats, and long conversations with the ghost of his dead wife. Book 2, The Wrong Hands, is out on July 23rd.

Amazon Prime Channel Sales

To take advantage of these deals, you have to be an Amazon Prime member - but if you're not already, they'll prompt you to join when you sign up for the channel(s) you like.

Acorn TV

This much-loved channel features shows from the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a variety of European countries (along with a couple stray shows from the Americas). They're a bit weak on comedy, but strong on cozy-ish mysteries with 40+ female protagonists. Get it HERE

BritBox

This one is almost exclusively British and it has nearly double the number of titles you'll find on Acorn TV. Though strong across a wide variety of categories, they're especially strong when it comes to crime and comedy (including a number of panel shows). Get it HERE

PBS Masterpiece

PBS Masterpiece is a US-wide channel that offers their Masterpiece programming plus a variety of other shows and documentaries. In addition to British content, they also offer a number of Walter Presents selections - European shows with subtitles. They're particularly strong on period dramas, but they also have a number of shows set in the present. Get it HERE

MHz Choice

MHz Choice is not for those who hate subtitles. They specialise in non-English programming, with shows and movies from most European countries and a few outside of Europe (including Korea and Japan). They DO have some British and Irish programming, including a number of shows in Scottish Gaelic, Gaelic, and Welsh. They recently absorbed all the programming from Topic, and that brought in a handful of British shows, too. Get it HERE

Other Channels on Sale...

Starz

Starz doesn't have a huge number of British shows, but the few they do have tend to be well-produced. They include Outlander, Men in Kilts, The White Queen, The White Princess, and Dublin Murders. Get it HERE

MGM+

Formerly known as Epix, MGM+ has a few good British or semi-British shows. They include Pennyworth, Belgravia, A Spy Among Friends, and The Winter King. Get it HERE

PBS Documentaries

This is another station where most of the programming is American, but there ARE a handful of great documentaries with some kind of British connection (especially if you're into the royal family). They include The Queen & the Coup, The Princes in the Tower, The Windsors: A Royal Family, and Dangerous Edge: A Life of Graham Greene. Get it HERE

Hallmark Movies Now

Hallmark is primarily American, but in recent years they've been setting an increasing number of films in the UK and Ireland. While a bit cheesy, there are times when that's just what you want. We recommend checking out Christmas at Castle Hart, Jolly Good Christmas, An American in Austen, Love & Jane, A Scottish Love Scheme, Paging Mrs. Darcy, and Sense & Sensibility. Get it HERE

The Great Courses Signature Collection

This channel offers access to all sorts of fun courses on things like history, languages, maths, cooking, science, writing, and more. A few worth checking out: England, the 1960s, and the Triumph of the Beatles, The Medieval Legacy, The Black Death: New Lessons from Recent Research, and The Great Tours: England, Scotland, and Wales. Get the channel HERE

Up Faith & Family

This family-friendly channel is mostly American, but they do have a few stray British, Australian, and Canadian offerings that might appear to some of our readers - including Wild at Heart (UK), 800 Words (NZ), and Hudson & Rex (CAN). Get the channel HERE

Scottish novelist Jenny Colgan is best known for heartwarming books that appeal primarily to women (though she's also been known to do a bit of sci-fi). With titles like The Cafe by the Sea, Little Beach Street Bakery, and The Bookshop on the Corner, her best-known books seem designed with one aim - to give the reader a warm, cosy space to spend a bit of time. They're not to everyone's taste, but there's no denying she's brightened up many a day. That's why we were so delighted for her when...

We have great news for the many people who've been asking about when the new Rebus adaptation will premiere in the US - a premiere date has been set! Based on Sir Ian Rankin's iconic Edinburgh-based detective series, it stars Richard Rankin as a younger version of John Rebus. The series kicks off when he's drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal when his brother Michael, a former soldier, crosses the line into criminality. Rebus finds himself torn between protecting his...
