What we're...

  • Watching: Fat Friends - finally, this classic is back on a streaming service. Set in Leeds, it follows the members of a slimming club - and four of the cast members (Ruth Jones, James Corden, Alison Steadman, and Sheridan Smith) would go on to appear together in Gavin & Stacey.
  • Reading: A Killing in November by Simon Mason - I hate to make Inspector Morse comparisons, but this smart, modern crime series set in Oxford is a worthy successor to Dexter's classics (so far, anyway). DI Ryan Wilkins grew up as part of the "criminal class" and maintains a healthy level of disgust towards privileged elites - something that doesn't help when investigating cases in and around the university. Worse yet, he's partnered with one of the wealthy elites he despises so much...

New Shows Coming to Acorn TV in August - If you've been waiting for more Under the Vines, you're in luck...

New Shows Coming to BritBox in August 2024 - Next month's lineup includes a menopause comedy and a new mystery set on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

5 British Films, Free With Ads

When it's too hot to go out, why not stay in with a British film? Here are 5 that are currently free to stream on Freevee (via Amazon Prime Video OR the Freevee app).

  • The Hawk (1993) - Dame Helen Mirren stars in this Hitchcockian thriller about a housewife who thinks her husband might be a serial killer.
  • The Song of Lunch (2010) - You know that Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson storyline in Love Actually? This film is basically that, but longer and better.
  • The Skin of Sorrow (2010) - It's 1832, and a young man's gambling debts have driven him to the brink - until a mysterious shopkeeper makes him a deal. A mysterious "skin of sorrow" will grant all his wishes, but shorten his lifespan.
  • Pat & Margaret (1989) - When a US soap queen moves to London in hopes of reviving her career, she's instead reunited with her long-lost working class sister...on live television. Victoria Wood and Julie Walters star.
  • All Things Bright & Beautiful (1994) - In Northern Ireland in 1954, a boy's prayers to Our Lady are mistaken for a two-way conversation. This ignites religious hysteria.

I'm saying you deliberately facilitated impediments in order to disoblige our inquiry. Does that make sense?

Scottish novelist Jenny Colgan is best known for heartwarming books that appeal primarily to women (though she's also been known to do a bit of sci-fi). With titles like The Cafe by the Sea, Little Beach Street Bakery, and The Bookshop on the Corner, her best-known books seem designed with one aim - to give the reader a warm, cosy space to spend a bit of time. They're not to everyone's taste, but there's no denying she's brightened up many a day. That's why we were so delighted for her when...
