British TV Show Status Updates: September 2024
Published 3 months ago • 6 min read
Last month, we sent out an email with current status updates for the most popular recent British TV shows - and we ended up getting more than 1000 emails back from people who said they loved it (apologies for not being able to reply individually).
So, for the second time, we're sending out a status update - with changes since last month highlighted in yellow. We've also created a much more comprehensive guide (350+ shows) with updates for a wider selection of recent British TV shows. You can check it out HERE and navigate to the section of the alphabet you'd like to check on.
Shows Renewed or Unknown
Agatha Raisin - Neither confirmed nor cancelled, but with such a long delay, it doesn't look great.
All Creatures Great & Small - Received a double renewal for seasons 5 and 6 + Christmas specials. Season 5 arrives in the UK on 19 September 2024, and it will premiere in the US on January 12th, 2025.
Doctor Who - Season 15 is definitely happening (exact date unknown), and Russell T Davies has stated he's working on another season of new episodes for a third Ncuti Gatwa-led season because he's confident it will happen. No official renewal for season 16, though.
Everyone Else Burns - Season 2 began filming earlier this year, no release date yet.
Father Brown - In April 2024, it was confirmed that seasons 12 and 13 had been commissioned. No word on when they will premiere, but based on past patterns, we would expect to see season 12 in January 2025 and season 13 in January 2026.
Good Omens - Though a season 3 pre-production was paused in the aftermath of the numerous accusations against author Neil Gaiman, a number of sources has reported that he offered to step back so it can continue. As of late September 2024, the future remains uncertain.
Good Ship Murder - Channel 5 in the UK has announced there will be a season 2 AND 3, along with a Christmas special. No word on dates as of September 2024.
Granite Harbour - Season 2 returned to BritBox August 15th, no word on season 3.
Grantchester - Season 9 premiered this summer on PBS, and work on season 10 has begun.
Harry Wild - Season 3 is now on Acorn TV, and they recently announced it's been renewed for season 4 and they're in production.
Heartstopper - Season 3 will arrive on Netflix October 3rd.
Here We Go - A third season renewal was confirmed in spring 2024, with the new season having 6 episodes and a Christmas special. No dates yet.
House of the Dragon - Season 3 begins filming in early 2025, season 4 will be the last.
Industry - Season 3 premiered this month in the US, no word on season 4.
Inside No. 9 - The 9th and final season comes to the US October 30th on BritBox.
Karen Pirie - Season 2 began filming in early 2024, no word on premiere date.
Lucy Worsley Investigates (2022) - A second season was announced in July 2024, and Lucy was in France investigating the Bayeux Tapestry and Norman Conquest at the time. No dates yet, but the post suggests they were filming at the time.
Madame Blanc Mysteries - The show was officially renewed for a 4th season and Christmas special, and production is already underway. No official dates, but of course we would expect to see the Christmas special around Christmas.
Magpie Murders & Moonflower Murders - Though there's been no word on a third season, Anthony Horowitz recently announced a third book in the series, Marble Hall Murders, to be released in the US on May 13th, 2025 - so there will be source material to work with if it's renewed. The second season, Moonflower Murders, premiered on PBS on September 15th.
Mallorca Files - Season 3 now on Amazon, Elen Rhys has teased the possible return of a guest star in season 4 - but no official word yet.
Manhunt - Colin Sutton (the real-life inspiration) and writer Ed Whitmore have both expressed interest in a season 3, but no word yet.
Marlow Murder Club - Season 1 premieres PBS on October 27th, but it's already been renewed for season 2. The third book in the series, The Queen of Poisons, came out this summer in the US.
McDonald & Dodds - No word yet on season 5, but stars have expressed an interest in continuing.
Shakespeare & Hathaway - Neither renewed nor cancelled, but Jo Joyner has said it looks unlikely. Sadly, creator Jude Tindall died in August.
Sherwood - Season 2 premiered in the UK in late August, no word yet on a US premiere date.
Shetland - Renewed for seasons 9 and 10 with Ashley Jensen. Season 9 began filming in March 2024, and season 10 will film in 2025. No air dates yet.
Signora Volpe - Season 2 just premiered, no decision yet on season 3.
Silent Witness - Renewed for season 28, expected in 2025.
Sister Boniface Mysteries - Returning with a feature-length special at Christmas, followed by season 4 in 2025.
Suspect - A second season began in July 2024, premiering in the US on BritBox on October 3rd. No word yet on a third season as of September 2024, but with plenty of open threads at the end of season 2, it seems likely the writers were hoping for another.
Time - Season 2 premiered earlier this year on BritBox, no word on season 3.
The Tower - Season 3 airs in the US on September 26th (BritBox). No official decision on S4 year, but the writer says he's already working on it.
Van der Valk - Season 4 premiered on PBS on September 15th. No word on season 5.
Vera - Season 14 filmed in summer 2024. Two 120-minute episodes will bring Brenda Blethyn's time as Vera to a close. At 78, she has certainly earned her retirement - but there have been unconfirmed rumours of a possible spinoff or continuation without her. An 11th Vera novel, The Dark Wives, was just published a few weeks ago.
Whitstable Pearl - Renewed for season 3, began filming in spring 2024. No premiere date, but we'd guess late 2024/early 2025.
Wolf Hall (The Mirror & the Light) - The final novel in the trilogy began filming in late 2023 and continued into early 2024. It's expected to premiere in the UK in late 2024/early 2025, with a US/PBS date unknown.
Definitively Cancelled or Completed Shows
These are shows for which there's been a credible report that they won't be back (usually a statement from an actor or production company). Keep in mind that we've seen cases where both renewals and cancellations/endings were later overturned - but it's rare.
