British TV Shows Americans Love More Than Brits + This Week's Premieres

Most people don’t think of Cornwall as a hub for surreal, time-bending cinema — but filmmaker Mark Jenkin has been quietly turning its fishing villages and coastal landscapes into the backdrop for some of Britain’s most haunting arthouse films. His latest, Rose of Nevada, premiered at Venice with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and will arrive in the US this October (first at indie theatres and festivals, probably getting to streaming services a little later).

The film follows Nick (George MacKay, 1917) and Liam (Callum Turner, Masters of the Air), two men who sign on to crew the Rose of Nevada — a vessel that vanished 30 years earlier and mysteriously reappears in their small Cornish village. What begins as a chance to provide for family or escape a troubled past soon spirals into something stranger: when the crew return to land, it seems as though they’ve slipped back in time to the boat’s original disappearance.

Though you can't watch this one yet, you CAN check out some of Jenkin's previous Cornwall-based films, either on Hulu or at the links below:

What we're...

  • Watching: One Chance - I know James Corden can be polarizing, but he's been a part of some really great productions over the years - including this uplifting film about the real-life Paul Potts, a shop assistant who dreamt of singing opera. After an appearance on Britain's Got Talent (and a memorable performance of Nessun dorma), he got that chance.
  • Reading: Dead in the Morning by Margaret Yorke - Sometimes, you just want a fun mystery you can tear through in a short afternoon - and this one is precisely that. Originally published in 1970, this classic village whodunit introduces Oxford don Dr Patrick Grant, whose weekend visit to a Hampshire country house turns deadly when the housekeeper is found dead under suspicious circumstances.

This week marks 50 years since the premiere of Fawlty Towers, the show that turned Basil Fawlty from a frayed hotel keeper into one of Britain’s most beloved characters. Created by John Cleese and Connie Booth, the series ran for just two seasons—twelve episodes in total—but its razor-sharp wit, chaotic hotel antics, and unforgettable one-liners secured its place in comedy legend. Sadly, the show isn't streaming via ANY strictly legal means in the US at the moment, though you can definitely...

For years, Sally Phillips has been one of those familiar faces on British TV—popping up as a scene-stealer in shows and films like Miranda, Smack the Pony, Bridget Jones's Diary, and many others. Soon, though, she'll be stepping into a leading role. The BBC’s upcoming The Hairdresser Mysteries will see Phillips leading a six-part crime drama as Lily Petal, a high-end hairdresser who trades the competitive city scene for a village salon. Once settled in, she discovers what every stylist knows:...

This week marks 44 years since the premiere of the classic British sitcom Only Fools & Horses. If you've never seen it, it's one of those shows that every British TV fan should at least try for a couple episodes. David Jason's portrayal of Del Boy is iconic, and the show is a warm, light-hearted portrayal of working-class London in the late twentieth century. Its blend of character-driven humour, emotional depth, and everyday realism helped shape the tone of modern British comedy for decades...
