If you're a fan of period dramas adapted from classic literature, you have a few to look forward to in the not-too-distant future. It's too soon to have premiere dates or details for any of them, but we should hear more in the coming months.
- Wuthering Heights - Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to star as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation, with Fennell writing, directing, and producing. The film is slated to begin shooting in the UK in 2025.
- Pride & Prejudice - Netflix is developing a new series based on Pride and Prejudice, with Dolly Alderton, author of Everything I Know About Love, set to write the scripts. Though not yet officially greenlit, it would be interesting to see how Netflix might attempt to modernise it.
- The Other Bennet Sister - The BBC has commissioned this 10-part drama based on Janice Hadlow’s novel, from Cardiff-based Bad Wolf (His Dark Materials) for BBC One. Written by Sarah Quintrell, it follows Mary Bennet, the often-overlooked middle sister from Pride and Prejudice, as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, independence, and romance.
- Miss Austen - Gill Hornby's beloved novel Miss Austen is being adapted into a four-part drama written by Andrea Gibb and starring Keeley Hawes. Set in 1830, the series follows Cassandra Austen (Hawes) as she searches for private letters that could tarnish her sister Jane's legacy, while flashbacks reveal the sisters' relationships and the events that shaped Jane’s writing.
What we're...
- Watching: Rivals on Hulu - Based on Dame Jilly Cooper's second Rutshire Chronicles novel Rivals, this hilariously bawdy series follows the bedroom and boardroom activities of a number of power players in the Cotswolds during the 1980s. The cast includes David Tennant (Broadchurch), Aidan Turner (Poldark), and Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd). Warning - if you're sensitive to profanity and nudity, you may wish to skip this one.
- Reading: Wicked Autumn by GM Malliet - Of this village mystery, Louise Penny (Inspector Gamache Mysteries) said, "Rarely have I read descriptions that have left me gasping, in both their hilarity and their painful truth. A wonderful read." The series follows a handsome vicar with an MI5 past who solves mysteries in the quaint village of Nether Monkslip - and if you enjoy lighter mysteries, this one is worth checking out.
