18 Brand New British TV Shows Coming to the US in March 2025

Today marks 10 years since the premiere of Arthur & George, a three-part miniseries based on Julian Barnes's novel of the same name. In it, Martin Clunes stars as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Outraged by the way an Anglo-Indian solicitor was being treated, he uses his fictional detective's deductive methods to get at the truth of the matter. The series is loosely based on the real-life Great Wyrley Outrages.

What we're...

  • Watching: Withnail & I - This 1987 black comedy stars Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann as a couple unemployed actors heading off on a holiday to the Lake District - but the real star of it (for me, anyway) is Richard Griffiths as the eccentric and wealthy Uncle Monty.
  • Reading: The Whispering Bones by Andrew Lowe - Technically, I'm starting this one as soon as it becomes available late tonight, but close enough. This series opener follows DCI Oswald Lennox, an insomniac detective, and PC Olivia Blackwood, who has ADHD. Their latest case leads them to a serial killer targeting North London’s wealthy suburbs, where victims are found drained of blood and surrounded by animal bones.

New Shows Coming to BritBox in March 2025

A Dash of a Dame...

Over on Facebook this weekend, we were talking about the fact that Agatha Christie's great grandson, James Pritchard, recently made it public that a fresh Miss Marple adaptation is in the works. Personally, I'd love to see Dame Penelope Keith in the role, but several people also mentioned Dame Penelope Wilton as their ideal choice.

For that reason, we thought it might be fun to revisit some of her quirkier and/or lesser-known productions which are currently available to stream in the US (because nearly all of us have seen the big ones like Downton Abbey, Calendar Girls, and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel).

  • Half Broken Things - Penelope Wilton plays Jean, a house sitter who bonds with a petty thief and his pregnant partner after they turn up on her doorstep.
  • Brief Encounters - I just mentioned this one in the last email (when talking about the Korean adaptation of it), but this fun series sees Wilton playing Pauline, a nervous woman who finds new friends while selling "marital aids".
  • Clockwise - As Pat, Wilton plays the unwilling driver for a stressed-out headmaster (John Cleese) whose meticulous travel plans unravel in a series of disastrous misadventures.
  • After Life - Wilton plays Anne, a wise and compassionate widow who regularly meets grieving journalist Tony (Ricky Gervais) on a park bench, offering him quiet but profound insights as he struggles to navigate life after loss.
  • The History Boys - Wilton plays art teacher Mrs. Bibby in this classic grammar school dramedy.
  • Miss Marple, "They Do it With Mirrors" - Wilton plays Carrie Lousie in this adaptation of the classic Marple tale.
  • The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry – Penelope Wilton plays Maureen, a woman struggling to understand her husband’s sudden decision to walk across England to visit a dying friend, forcing her to confront long-buried emotions.
  • Blame It on the Bellboy - Few films manage to pack in as much British TV talent as this comedy about mistaken identity in a hotel. Wilton appears as Patricia Fulford, but it also features Dudley Moore, Bryan Brown, Richard Griffiths, Alison Steadman, and Jim Carter.

And of course, if we're talking about Wilton and Christie, we can't forget to mention the 2024 adaptation of Murder is Easy, which saw Wilton playing Miss Lavinia Pinkerton.

"There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it. Only a present that builds and creates itself as the past withdraws."

Evelyn, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Most of us have seen Siobhan Finneran in something - whether it's Downton Abbey, Happy Valley, Benidorm, or one of the dozens of others shows she's acted in. Until the December US premiere of Protection, though, we haven't had the pleasure of seeing her get top billing. In it, she stars as a witness protection officer who finds herself at the center of a major breach...and compromised by an affair with a co-worker. Like Brenda Blethyn or Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, Finneran is one of...

This email is a little different from our usual emails, and it won't be something most of our readers need to hear - but I've come across a few really concerning situations in the last couple months, and I wanted to make sure I put this warning out for those who DO need it (or for those with a vulnerable friend or family member). But first, what we're... Watching: Simon Reeve's Return to Cornwall - This scenic one-part special sees adventurer Simon Reeve returning to one of England's...

Remember Broadchurch? That delightfully atmospheric coastal mystery with Olivia Colman and David Tennant, the one that still feels relatively recent? It turned 12 today. I repeat: Broadchurch is 12. Clearly, the pandemic did something weird to time, because it doesn't seem like it came out 12 WHOLE YEARS AGO. But it did. What we're... Watching: The Angels' Share - This Scottish film is one of several movies added to Acorn TV this week, and it follows a dad who's just dodged a prison sentence....
