Acorn TV Announces September US Premieres + Dept Q, Rebus, Father Brown Updates
Published about 2 months ago • 3 min read
A few quick updates before we get into what's new this week...
It's been a great few weeks for fans of Edinburgh-based crime dramas - in case you missed the news, both Dept Q (Netflix) and the new Rebus (ViaPlay/BBC) have been renewed for second seasons.
A bit further south, the Jersey-based reboot of Bergerac has also been renewed for a second season (even though American viewers are still waiting for the first season).
Grantchester may be ending with next year's new season, but those who love a dash of church with their mysteries will be pleased to know Father Brown just wrapped filming on season 13, and the all-new Murder Before Evensong is coming to Acorn TV on September 29th.
Watching: The Railway Murders - If you enjoy mysteries set on the railways, this historical true crime docuseries is worth watching. Each episode looks at a different crime in a different place and time within the UK's history.
Reading: Lonely Hearts by John Harvey - The Times called this Nottingham-based crime novel one of the "100 Greatest Crime Novels of the Century" - so it's been on my list for a while. It's the first book in the Charlie Resnick series, and it's set in that strange little window of time where people used pagers (which makes it a fun change from all the device and CCTV-heavy crime stories we have now).
On BritBox, new episodes of Sister Boniface Mysteries continue weekly through October 7th. On the 26th, they'll add Playing Nice, a new psychological thriller starring James Norton (Grantchester, Happy Valley). They'll also be added a couple of older shows that day - Last Tango in Halifax (all seasons) and Happy Valley (season 1 on the 26th, 2 on the 27th, and 3 on the 28th).
On Acorn TV, new episodes of Irish Blood continue (1/week), along with new episodes of Summertide (2/week). On the 25th, they added season 6 of the Danish crime drama The Sommerdahl Murders.
On PBS Masterpiece, Sunday the 24th brought a load of new premieres - season 2 of Marlow Murder Club, season 4 of Professor T, and season 6 of Unforgotten. New episodes continue weekly on Sundays (though if you have a Passport membership via their website, you can get many series as a binge instead of a weekly drip).
On Netflix, the 21st saw them add the new Suranne Jones political thriller Hostage. On the 28th, they add the long-awaited Thursday Murder Club film starring Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, and Pierce Brosnan. (More info and trailer HERE)
On AMC+, Kidnapped premieres on August 28th. The thriller follows a young British model who thinks she's landed a modeling job, only to be drugged and kidnapped.
Prefer to buy on Amazon? It's a little more expensive (they take a huge cut), but they do offer Prime shipping, so that's always a plus. Check it out on Amazon HERE.

If you've been enjoying The Crow Girl over on Acorn TV, great news - it was just announced today that the series would return for a second season. The series follows DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles, Keeping Faith) and psychotherapist Dr. Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly, Happy Valley) as they join forces to hunt a killer targeting young men. Since the synopsis for season 2 contains spoilers (and new episodes are still premiering in the US), we've placed the synopsis at the very bottom of this...
Most people don’t think of Cornwall as a hub for surreal, time-bending cinema — but filmmaker Mark Jenkin has been quietly turning its fishing villages and coastal landscapes into the backdrop for some of Britain’s most haunting arthouse films. His latest, Rose of Nevada, premiered at Venice with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and will arrive in the US this October (first at indie theatres and festivals, probably getting to streaming services a little later). The film follows Nick (George...
This week marks 50 years since the premiere of Fawlty Towers, the show that turned Basil Fawlty from a frayed hotel keeper into one of Britain’s most beloved characters. Created by John Cleese and Connie Booth, the series ran for just two seasons—twelve episodes in total—but its razor-sharp wit, chaotic hotel antics, and unforgettable one-liners secured its place in comedy legend. Sadly, the show isn't streaming via ANY strictly legal means in the US at the moment, though you can definitely...
