British Leads, American Shows

Summer is often a slow time for new British TV premieres in the US - and when you factor in the low episode count, it can leave you in a real TV drought. Though we prefer British TV, many wonderful British actors have crossed the pond to do American shows (and they have far more episodes, in most cases). Below, we look at a few you might enjoy...

  • Forever (2014) - Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd (Harrow) stars in this series about an immortal NYC medical examiner who helps the police while also trying to discover a way to end his immortality. Judd Hirsch gives a solid performance as his adopted son and confidant. The CW
  • Imposters (2017) - Rob Heaps (Home Fires) stars in this series about a man who finds out his wife is a con artist who's just taken him for all he's worth. Instead of giving up easily, he finds her previous targets and they set off to find her - and since they're all broke, they have to do a bit of conning to raise travel funds. Netflix
  • Instinct (2018) - Scottish actor Alan Cumming stars as Dylan Reinhart, a psychology professor, author, and former CIA officer who consults with the NYPD on some of their strangest cases. Streaming rental or purchase on platforms like Amazon Prime, YouTube, Apple TV
  • Billions (2016) - English actor Damian Lewis stars as hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod, a clever but aggressive financier whose activities attract a lot of legal attention. Amazon Prime & Paramount+
  • Succession (2018) - Scottish actor Brian Cox stars as patriarch Logan Roy, a man who stands at the head of a wealthy media conglomerate - and a greedy, scheming family who all want to be on top when dear old dad kicks the bucket. English actor Matthew Macfadyen also gives a memorable performance as Roy's son-in-law, Tom Wambsgans. Max (formerly HBO Max)

It's the covering of the tracks that always gets you in the end.

Recent Casting Notices...

As always, there's much to look forward to. Here are a few more projects in various stages of development:

  • Coldwater - This ITV thriller is set to include Andrew Lincoln, Eve Myles, Indira Varma, and Ewen Bremner in the cast. It will follow an angry middle-aged man who secretly hates his life as a stay-at-home dad. When his impotent rage reaches a head, he moves his family to a rural town as far from London as possible - and there, he develops a friendship that could put everyone in danger. Films in late 2024.
  • The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, Season 2 - Noel Fielding (The IT Crowd) stars in this comedy about the infamous British highwayman - and it's coming back for a second season on Apple TV+. Filming begins in September.
  • The Florist - This feature film will be an action thriller about an assassin who works in plain sight as a florist - and it begins filming this autumn.
  • Bridgerton, Season 4 - Most die-hard Bridgerton fans are well aware this one is likely to continue for a long time, but season 4 is expected to head into production this September.

21 years ago today (31 August 2003), ITV aired the first episode of the delightful British mystery Rosemary & Thyme. Originally created by Brian Eastman (Poirot) to entertain his garden-loving wife, it stars Felicity Kendal (The Good Life) and Pam Ferris (Where the Heart Is) as two women who create a gardening business and run into murders on nearly every job site. For three seasons, it combined gorgeous scenery, female friendship, and strangely plant-related murders - and it's a must-watch...

Most book-loving adults will have read 1984 at some time in their lives. What a lot of people don't know, though, is how a remote Scottish island (which these days feels like an antidote to everything 1984-ish in the world) helped inspire the masterpiece. In 1947, George Orwell was on the Isle of Jura, seeking solitude and nature to help his health and make it easier to focus on writing. It was here, surrounded by the island's natural beauty and harsh conditions, that he found both the peace...
