BritBox Announces June US Lineup + Detectorists Creator Announcement

Detectorists is one of the most wonderfully unique, unmistakably British TV shows ever made - and its creator and star, Mackenzie Crook, has a new show coming soon.

Small Prophets reunites Crook with Detectorists co-star Pearce Quigley, who stars as Michael Sleep, a lonely DIY store worker whose quiet life is upended when his father (Sir Michael Palin) shares a bizarre alchemical recipe that might just summon magical spirits with the power to predict the future.

As Michael sets out to find answers about his missing love, he’s joined by a sharp young coworker (Lauren Patel) and disrupted by a hilariously overbearing store manager played by Crook himself. With nosy neighbours (Sophie Willan and Jon Pointing), surreal shed activity, and a touch of animated magic, Small Prophets promises to blend heartfelt oddness with the same gentle wit and warmth of Detectorists.

It's too soon for a premiere date, but we'll definitely be keeping an eye out for updates.

What we're...

  • Watching: And Mrs. - This 2024 rom-com stars Aisling Bea (Trollied, This Way Up) stars as a woman whose fiance drops dead...and she decides to marry him anyway. It's not an especially memorable movie, but it's a bit of fun with a number of familiar British TV faces - including Dame Harriet Walter, Sinead Cusack, Peter Egan, and Paul Kaye. Also on Tubi (free with ads).
  • Reading: Precipice by Robert Harris - Set in the turbulent summer of 1914, this historical thriller follows a reckless aristocrat's affair with the Prime Minister as a secret leak turns scandal into a threat to the British government. It's not a bargain book, but you can check with your local library if it's a bit more than you like to spend.

If you've been enjoying The Crow Girl over on Acorn TV, great news - it was just announced today that the series would return for a second season. The series follows DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles, Keeping Faith) and psychotherapist Dr. Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly, Happy Valley) as they join forces to hunt a killer targeting young men. Since the synopsis for season 2 contains spoilers (and new episodes are still premiering in the US), we've placed the synopsis at the very bottom of this...

Most people don’t think of Cornwall as a hub for surreal, time-bending cinema — but filmmaker Mark Jenkin has been quietly turning its fishing villages and coastal landscapes into the backdrop for some of Britain’s most haunting arthouse films. His latest, Rose of Nevada, premiered at Venice with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and will arrive in the US this October (first at indie theatres and festivals, probably getting to streaming services a little later). The film follows Nick (George...

This week marks 50 years since the premiere of Fawlty Towers, the show that turned Basil Fawlty from a frayed hotel keeper into one of Britain’s most beloved characters. Created by John Cleese and Connie Booth, the series ran for just two seasons—twelve episodes in total—but its razor-sharp wit, chaotic hotel antics, and unforgettable one-liners secured its place in comedy legend. Sadly, the show isn't streaming via ANY strictly legal means in the US at the moment, though you can definitely...
