BritBox June Premieres + New British Productions

Tomorrow (June 30th) will mark 12 years since the premiere of The Hollow Crown on BBC Two. Packed with some of the UK's finest acting talents - including Dame Judi Dench, Hugh Bonneville, Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Stewart, Ben Whishaw, David Suchet, Julie Walters, Anton Lesser, Keeley Hawes, Samuel West, Jason Watkins, Adrian Dunbar, Paul Ritter, Geoffrey Palmer, and Jeremy Irons - the series offers film adaptations of a number of Shakespeare's history plays.

Unlike many more recent adaptations of classical works, the films are as faithful as reasonably possible within the format. Some elements and characters are compressed or consolidated, but it's not the kind of production where you'll hear modern slang and pop music in the background.

Though it's not free with any major subscription services, you can rent or buy it on most of the major platforms (Amazon Prime, Apple TV, YouTube).

The Most Romantic British Films of the Last 20 Years - We watched An American in Austen this weekend, and as much as we loved the Austen connection, it left us wanting something better - and all of these films qualify.

As for An American in Austen (for those who are wondering), it's a Hallmark film set in the UK and featuring an brief appearance from Fergie. It follows an American woman who feels ambiguous about her boyfriend's proposal, only to wish for Mr. Darcy and find herself transported into the world of Pride & Prejudice. In the US, you can watch it HERE.

Recent Casting Notices...

As always, there's much to look forward to. Here are a few more projects in various stages of development:

  • The Agency - Michael Fassbender stars in this Paramount + with Showtime series, and George Clooney is among the producers. It follows as a covert CIA agent (played by Fassbender) is ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. Romance reignites when he encounters a love from his past, but it comes into conflict with his espionage work - putting both of them in danger. Filming in London, Europe, and Africa during summer 2024.
  • The Au Pair - Sally Bretton (Beyond Paradise) stars as Zoe Dalton, a woman who seems to have it all - a successful husband (Kenny Doughty, Vera), a good relationship with her stepkids, a business, and a lovely home in the English countryside. Unfortunately, her diabetic father (David Suchet, Poirot) moves in next door, adding to her obligations and stress. She agrees to hire an au pair, but the lovely young French woman opens up a whole new set of problems... Filming begins in Dublin, summer 2024.
  • Bergerac - This reboot of the classic crime drama (which starred John Nettles) is filming in the Channel Islands during summer 2024. The new series aims to differentiate itself with a contemporary twist, making DS Jim Bergerac confront his demons while working on a high-stakes police investigation that will stretch across the entire series (as opposed to the episodic mysteries of the older version). We've yet to see an announcement about who will star, but a number of big names have been mentioned.

21 years ago today (31 August 2003), ITV aired the first episode of the delightful British mystery Rosemary & Thyme. Originally created by Brian Eastman (Poirot) to entertain his garden-loving wife, it stars Felicity Kendal (The Good Life) and Pam Ferris (Where the Heart Is) as two women who create a gardening business and run into murders on nearly every job site. For three seasons, it combined gorgeous scenery, female friendship, and strangely plant-related murders - and it's a must-watch...

In 1947, George Orwell was on the Isle of Jura, seeking solitude and nature to help his health and make it easier to focus on writing. It was here, surrounded by the island's natural beauty and harsh conditions, that he found both the peace...
