What we're...

  • Watching: Blackshore - So far, there's nothing too original or exciting about this Irish crime drama - but that's exactly why it's great. You've got the slightly tortured detective who returns to her small hometown to investigate a case, the pretty Irish scenery, and the small community full of secrets. Nobody's trying to do anything too crazy or original, and sometimes, that's exactly what you want.
  • Reading: Marple: Twelve New Mysteries - Though I started reading this a couple years ago when it first came out, I really only read the stories from authors I know and like (Elly Griffiths, Val McDermid, Ruth Ware, etc.). When I spotted it in the Kindle sale list this afternoon, I picked it up and started in on some of the others. Though they don't all capture the precise feel of an Agatha Christie story, they're great fun, especially if you like shorter reads that don't require as much focus.

Mark Gatiss Returns...

Though it hasn't yet premiered in the US, we're delighted to have spotted season 2 of Bookish on casting sites. Set to premiere on PBS (no date yet) in the US, the series stars Mark Gatiss as the owner of an antiquarian bookshop in 1946 London.

From the relative safety of his bookshop, he helps police solve particularly challenging crimes - while hiding his true self behind a "lavender marriage" to his lovely wife Trottie (Polly Walker, Line of Duty).

New Dawn French Comedy

Filming has begun on Can You Keep a Secret?, a new sitcom starring Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley), Mark Heap (Friday Night Dinner), Craig Roberts (Submarine), and Mandip Gill (Doctor Who).

Written by This Country producer Simon Mayhew-Archer, it stars French as Debbie Fendon, a protective granny who fakes her husband’s death for an insurance payout — dragging her frazzled son and his police officer wife into the mess.

Set and filmed in the West Country, the six-episode series has no confirmed premiere date or international streaming details yet.

While you wait, we recommend checking out The Trouble with Maggie Cole if you haven't already. The dramedy features French and Heap together in the leading roles, and we really wish it had a second season (sadly, it's not looking good considering it's been 5 years without a peep).

Today marks 17 years since the premiere of Bonekickers - which really doesn't feel that old to me when I watch it. The series stars Hugh Bonneville (Douglas is Cancelled), Julie Graham (Queens of Mystery), and Adrian Lester (Hustle), and it dramatises the lives of archaeologists who see a bit more excitement than most. Sadly, there's just one season - but you can watch it HERE. UPDATE: Last minute news addition - As we were prepping this email it was announced that Grantchester is going to...

Amazon's annual Prime Day sales are this week, and as usual, that means a number of streaming channels have been heavily discounted. For us, this is always a great time to subscribe to services we want to try, or to catch up on shows we want to see on services we don't use enough to keep year-round. Amazon makes it easy to cancel when you're ready (no calls or customer service necessary, just a few clicks on the "Memberships and Subscriptions" section of the account), and if you use something...

First off - after a couple of very long days of packing, all pre-ordered copies of the British TV Streaming Guide: US Edition, Summer 2025 have been shipped out and picked up by the USPS - and as you might have seen in our Facebook group, a few have arrived at their destinations already. The initial print run sold out, but we got a couple more boxes today and we're expecting a few hundred more later this week. You can buy a copy or just learn more HERE. In the last year or two, there have...
