British TV Show Status Updates: August 2024
Published about 1 month ago • 5 min read
We get a lot of emails from people who want to know more about what's happening with their favourite shows - and while we often provide little updates here and there as news comes out, we thought it might be useful to send out a semi-regular email that offers a more comprehensive set of updates about the status of the most popular current British TV shows.
So - that's what this is. If it's popular, we'll continue to expand it until it includes pretty much every British show currently or recently in production. We've included links to the shows in case you're not familiar with all of them, and at the very end we have a list of shows which have been definitely cancelled.
Shows Renewed or Unknown
Agatha Raisin - Neither confirmed nor cancelled, but with such a long delay, it doesn't look great.
Doctor Who - Season 15 is definitely happening (exact date unknown), and Russell T Davies has stated he's working on another season of new episodes for a third Ncuti Gatwa-led season because he's confident it will happen. No official renewal for season 16, though.
Everyone Else Burns - Season 2 began filming earlier this year, no release date yet.
Granite Harbour - Season 2 returns to BritBox August 15th, no word on season 3.
Grantchester - Season 9 premiered this summer on PBS, and work on season 10 has begun.
Harry Wild - Season 3 is now on Acorn TV, and they just announced it's been renewed for season 4 and they're in production.
Magpie Murders - A second season, Moonflower Murders, will premiere on September 15th on PBS.
Mallorca Files - Season 3 now on Amazon, Elen Rhys has teased the possible return of a guest star in season 4 - but no official word yet.
Manhunt - Colin Sutton (the real-life inspiration) and writer Ed Whitmore have both expressed interest in a season 3, but no word yet.
Marlow Murder Club - Season 1 premieres PBS on October 27th, but it's already been renewed for season 2. The third book in the series, The Queen of Poisons, came out this summer in the US.
McDonald & Dodds - No word yet on season 5, but stars have expressed an interest in continuing.
Sherwood - Season 2 has filmed, expected sometime in 2024.
Shetland - Renewed for seasons 9 and 10 with Ashley Jensen. Season 9 began filming in March 2024, and season 10 will film in 2025. No air dates yet.
Signora Volpe - Season 2 just premiered, no decision yet on season 3.
Silent Witness - Renewed for season 28, expected in 2025.
Sister Boniface Mysteries - Returning with a feature-length special at Christmas, followed by season 4 in 2025.
Time - Season 2 premiered earlier this year on BritBox, no word on season 3.
Van der Valk - Season 4 has premiered in the UK and will premiere on PBS on September 15th. No word on season 5.
Vera - Season 14 filmed in summer 2024. Two 120-minute episodes will bring Brenda Blethyn's time as Vera to a close. At 78, she has certainly earned her retirement - but there have been unconfirmed rumours of a possible spinoff or continuation without her. An 11th Vera novel, The Dark Wives, is available for pre-order ahead of its August 27th US release date.
Whitstable Pearl - Renewed for season 3, began filming in spring 2024. No premiere date, but we'd guess late 2024/early 2025.
Wolf Hall (The Mirror & the Light) - The final novel in the trilogy began filming in late 2023 and continued into early 2024. It's expected to premiere in the UK in late 2024/early 2025, with a US/PBS date unknown.
Definitively Cancelled Shows
These are shows for which there's been a credible report that they won't be back (usually a statement from an actor or production company). Keep in mind that we've seen cases where both renewals and cancellations/endings were later overturned - but it's rare.

21 years ago today (31 August 2003), ITV aired the first episode of the delightful British mystery Rosemary & Thyme. Originally created by Brian Eastman (Poirot) to entertain his garden-loving wife, it stars Felicity Kendal (The Good Life) and Pam Ferris (Where the Heart Is) as two women who create a gardening business and run into murders on nearly every job site. For three seasons, it combined gorgeous scenery, female friendship, and strangely plant-related murders - and it's a must-watch...
Most book-loving adults will have read 1984 at some time in their lives. What a lot of people don't know, though, is how a remote Scottish island (which these days feels like an antidote to everything 1984-ish in the world) helped inspire the masterpiece. In 1947, George Orwell was on the Isle of Jura, seeking solitude and nature to help his health and make it easier to focus on writing. It was here, surrounded by the island's natural beauty and harsh conditions, that he found both the peace...
