More British TV Mystery Updates + British Edgar Awards Domination
Published 29 days ago • 3 min read
There's plenty of British TV news to share today, but first - if you've ever wanted to support these free newsletters in a way that costs you nothing extra, we have a great way to do just that. Right now, TopCashBack is paying extra for new referrals, so if you sign up (free) via our link and click their links before your everyday online purchases (like Target, Petco, Walmart, Chewy, etc), we'll get $40 at no cost to you.
All you have to do is sign up HERE for free, then go to their website and look up the retailer before you buy things you'd ordinarily buy. We've used them for years now - paying them $0 but getting more than $2300 back in the form of gift cards and PayPal payments. It takes purchases a little while to come back in the form of cash/gift card (your choice), but it all adds up.
And if that's not something you understand or would use, no worries - we figure it never hurts to see if anyone's interested and willing.
What we're...
Watching: The Sticky - If you enjoyed Bank of Dave on Netflix, this is another "one (wo)man against a corrupt system" production worth checking out. Set in Canada, it stars Margo Martindale as Ruth Landry, a wronged maple syrup farmer who assembles a team for the syrup heist of the century.
Reading: Atonement by Ian McEwan - This is one of those modern classics that everyone says you should read, but I've never quite gotten round to it - until I spotted it on sale this weekend (still on sale for $1.99 as of Feb 22nd). Set in 1935, it tells the story of how one young girl's misunderstanding of a mature situation leads to serious repercussions for all involved - and of course, because it's McEwan, you can count on lovely prose and psychologically complex characters.
The Return of Inspector Ellis?
We get a LOT of questions about whether Inspector Ellis will be coming back, and while we don't have an official answer from Channel 5 or Acorn TV, we're excited to say that in the last week or so, we've seen a season 2 listed in some of the paid cast/crew sites we subscribe to. Status is listed as "Spring 2025" in Belfast, so here's hoping that means they'll be filming soon, with new episodes not longer after that.
One can never be totally sure until the official announcement, but often, sites for cast/crew recruitment are the first place to pick up new activity on a series.
Professor T Renewed
ITV has confirmed that Professor T will return for a fifth season, with Ben Miller reprising his role as the brilliant but eccentric criminologist Jasper Tempest. This renewal comes before Season 4 has even aired, proving just how popular the series has been. With a fifth season, the British adaptation will officially have more seasons than either the Belgian original or the German adaptation (though not as many episodes as the Belgian version).
Season 4 will premiere later this year on PBS and ITV, bringing back Frances de la Tour as Jasper’s mother, along with Zoe Wanamaker and Juliet Stevenson. Season 5, already in the works, will feature six brand-new episodes. Returning cast includes Barney White, Sunetra Sarker, and Rhian Blundell as part of the police team. We don't have premiere dates yet, but we'll update when we know more.
BritBox announced the greenlighting of a new Italy-based crime series starring Lovejoy and Downton Abbey star Phyllis Logan. Logan plays Elena Da Vinale, the warm and witty matriarch of a family in Capri - and the mother to the late wife of DCI Joe Mottram (Warren Brown,Trigger Point), a top detective with the Metropolitan Police.
After a family tragedy, Mottram and his daughter head to Capri to stay with his Italian in-laws for the summer. Unsure how to move forward and help his daughter, he quickly gets wrapped up in local cases.
Other cast members include Cristiana Dell'Anna as local inspector Lara Sarrancino, Beau Gadson as Joe's daughter Angelica, Urbano Barberini as Gennaro Da Vinale, the gregarious patriarch of the Da Vinale family and legendary local chef; Alessandro Fella as Luca Da Vinale, Gennaro's charming but ne'er-do-well nephew; Gaia Scodellaro as Daria, a local divorcee who works in the restaurant kitchen and Alessandro Bedetti as Daniele, a young lothario who falls in with Angelica and offers to show her the island.
No word yet on a premiere date.
Good Ship Murder...
We had a few questions about Good Ship Murder, and we're pleased to be able to share good news on this one. Though we don't have a US premiere date for season 2 yet, new episodes have been airing over in the UK, and we're hopeful the US won't be too far behind.
Even better? The show's already been renewed for season 3. If you're a fan of this one, you can check out some behind-the-scenes footage from the filming on actor Shayne Ward's Instagram account HERE. He mentions that season 3 will begin filming in March 2025.
New in February... (March updates coming very soon)

If you're already missing Brenda Blethyn's on-screen presence, you'll be pleased to know she has a new project in the works - an upcoming historical comedy called Fools. Starring alongside Jim Broadbent and Karen Gillan, Blethyn will appear in this 16th-century tale about Queen Mary Tudor and her unexpected friendship with her court jester, Jane Foole (played by Patsy Ferran). The film, written and directed by Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered, Drop The Dead Donkey), promises to be a witty and...
Today marks 20 years since the premiere of the BBC miniseries Archangel, which stars Daniel Craig as a British professor of Soviet history who finds himself pulled into a larger mystery during a trip to Russia. Though it's a little older, it's a great look at Craig before he became famous worldwide as James Bond in Quantum of Solace. With just three 45-minute episodes, it's a quick binge - and you can watch it free HERE on Amazon Prime (also free with ads on Pluto TV and Roku Channel). QUICK...
