One of the weird and charming things about Germany (yes, Germany - stay with me for a moment) is that Germans have kind of a strange tendency to latch on to something and really go crazy for it. Like David Hasselhoff. Or for one only the older generations are likely to know, Roger Whittaker (boy could he whistle!)
More relevant to this newsletter, however, is the German love for Cornish author Rosamunde Pilcher (The Shell Seekers, Winter Solstice). If you ever watched some of the TV adaptations of her work, you may have noticed that quite a few of them feature German actors (especially if you're a chronic IMDb-er who looks up that sort of thing). That's because many of them were German productions or co-productions.
Pilcher's books have sold millions of copies in Germany, and they've been turned into more than 160 German TV dramas - with many knowing Sunday night as "Pilcher Night". There's a Rosamunde Pilcher route in Cornwall, and the county welcomes ~350,000 Germans each year.
Sadly, Pilcher died in 2019 at the age of 94, but many obituaries mentioned the lovely and unique relationship between her and the German people.
