Recent British TV News Bites (for Americans)

We have a lot of random British TV news that's been building up lately, and since most people don't see every single Facebook post we make (thanks to their algorithm), we figured we'd throw it all in a quick email for anyone who might have missed something.

First off, PBS has announced dates for a couple of returning shows. Season 4 of Vienna Blood premieres January 5th, 2025, with new episodes weekly through the 26th (4 in total).

Season 5 of All Creatures Great & Small will premiere on January 12th, 2025.

What we're...

  • Watching: Fat Friends - I've watched this one a couple times over the years, and while it's far from the usual "cosy English village" image of British life, few shows manage such a realistic portrayal of working class people. Set in and around Leeds, it follows the lives of several people who participate in a slimming club - and it includes early performances from Ruth Jones and James Corden (along with Alison Steadman, who would also appear in Gavin & Stacey alongside them).
  • Reading: Whiteout by Ken Follett - I picked this one up on sale this morning (the Kindle format was/is heavily discounted as of Tuesday afternoon). After a canister of a deadly virus disappears from a secret lab owned by the Oxenfords, a security officers heads to their Scottish estate during a blizzard to find out what happened.

Christmas Special News...

It's not uncommon for a few more to get added in December, but for now we have a few confirmed (new) Christmas specials for next month...

A number of people have asked about the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special, as well as the Christmas event the Princess of Wales will be hosting, but we haven't gotten any official information on whether those will be on BritBox (though we wouldn't be at all surprised, since they often make Christmas additions after the official schedule has gone out for the month).

Upcoming Book-to-Screen Adaptations

A great many British TV shows and films are based on books - but here are a few currently in some stage of production.

  • The Dark - Seven days, four deaths—Detective Monica Kennedy and social worker Michael Bach race against time in the Scottish Highlands to stop a meticulous killer. That's all based on the book summary, of course, as few details have been released about the production other than the fact that it's based on Halliday's book. Filming begins in Glasgow, summer 2025.
  • Murder Before Evensong - Acorn TV and Channel 5 are in the process of co-producing an adaptation of Reverend Richard Coles' bestselling mystery novel - and casting sites say production begins in January 2025.
  • H is for Hawk - This upcoming film tells the true story of Helen, a woman who tends to a goshawk after her father's death. Brenda Gleeson and Claire Foy will star, and filming began in Cambridge in November 2024.
  • Flavia - This upcoming feature film is based on Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce novels, which begin when young Flavia discovers a dead body at her decaying manor and her father is accused - so she embarks on a daring investigation to find the real killer. Starring Martin Freeman and Molly Belle Wright, with Toby Jones, Annette Badland, and Jonathan Pryce, the film wraps in November.

"Once, the world was full of wonders, but it belongs to humans now. We creatures have all but disappeared. Daemons, vampires, and witches hiding in plain sight, ill at ease, even with each other. But, as my father used to say, in every ending...there is a new beginning."

We're just waiting on details from a couple more streaming networks before we wrap things up and get it submitted for Amazon's approval. Ever since the new Rebus adaptation premiered on ViaPlay last week, we've gotten a lot of emails like... "Okay, I've subscribed to ViaPlay for Rebus - what else should I watch while I have it?" Why would I subscribe to a service for one show? Do they have anything else worth watching? And of course, we received a few messages that were just venting about how many streaming services you need to watch all the good British shows - which we understand (though as a news site, we can't do anything...
