Shakespeare & Hathaway Update + Brand New British TV Premieres in the US This Month
Published 7 days ago • 3 min read
Today marks 9 years since the premiere of Motherland, a brilliant British comedy about the trials of middle class motherhood in modern England. Created by comedy legend Graham Linehan (Father Ted, IT Crowd, Black Books) alongside Sharon Horgan, Helen Serafinowicz, and Holly Walsh, it continued for three seasons and a couple specials before spawning a spin-off, Amandaland, which is sadly not yet available in the US.
NEWS: Those who've been waiting for Shakespeare & Hathaway's fifth season are just a little bit closer to getting their wishes granted - the UK channel U&Alibi has announced a UK premiere date of September 24th. There's still no word on a US date, but at least we know the episodes are finished and heading out into the world.
It's also worth noting that for those without a BritBox subscription, you can also view the first two seasons on the Hallmark+ streaming service or HBO Max. HBO Max is currently offering a number of BritBox shows as a limited-time promotion.
What we're...
Watching: Marlow Murder Club - Season 2 started a couple weeks ago, but being busy and having read the books, I wasn't in too big a rush to get started. The new season follows Death Comes to Marlow, and so far, it manages to be as light and fun as the first.
Reading: The Hallmarked Man by Robert Galbraith - This is one of the few series where I have to actively force myself to slow down to make sure it's not over too quickly. The latest book (new this week) involves the case of a dismembered body in the vault of a silver shop near a Freemasons' Hall, and if you listen to the audiobook, it's 31 hours and 8 minutes of pure enjoyment. The entire series is narrated by actor Robert Glenister (Sherwood, Hustle), and he makes it even better.
On BritBox, new episodes of Sister Boniface Mysteries continue weekly through October 7th. On the 1st, they added the crime drama Second Sight (with Clive Owen), followed by the Australian Death in Paradise spin-off Return to Paradise on the 2nd. On the 3rd, they added the Robson Green classic Wire in the Blood, followed by season 1 of Lynley (2025 adaptation) on the 4th. On the 10th, they'll add the new period drama The Hardacres, which has been extremely well-reviewed in the UK.
On Acorn TV, Irish Blood wraps up with its season 1 finale on September 8th, and new episodes of Summertide continue weekly (2/week). On the 1st, they added the Australian series Totally Completely Fine, and on the 8th they'll add the American film The Tribes of Palos Verdes and the new British crime series The Crow Girl.
On PBS Masterpiece, Sundays continue to bring new episodes of several crime series - season 2 of Marlow Murder Club, season 4 of Professor T, and season 6 of Unforgotten. If you have a Passport membership via their website, of course, you can get many series as a binge instead of the usual weekly drip.
On Netflix, the 28th brought the long-awaited Thursday Murder Club film starring Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, and Pierce Brosnan. On September 5th, the new season of The Great British Baking Show began.
On Amazon Prime Video, the 5th brought Dish it Out, a cooking show featuring Gordon Ramsay's daughter Matilda.
On Peacock, Downton Abbey Celebrates the Grand Finale will premiere on September 11th.
Prefer to buy on Amazon? It's a little more expensive (they take a huge cut), but they do offer Prime shipping, so that's always a plus. Check it out on Amazon HERE.
"I feel like we're in one of those Sunday night dramas about two bright-eyed, feisty old lady detectives outsmarting the police at every turn."
Joyce, Thursday Murder Club

This week marks 44 years since the premiere of the classic British sitcom Only Fools & Horses. If you've never seen it, it's one of those shows that every British TV fan should at least try for a couple episodes. David Jason's portrayal of Del Boy is iconic, and the show is a warm, light-hearted portrayal of working-class London in the late twentieth century. Its blend of character-driven humour, emotional depth, and everyday realism helped shape the tone of modern British comedy for decades...
This year marks 50 years since the premiere of one of the UK's greatest sitcoms of all time - The Good Life (aka Good Neighbors in the US). As it opens, Tom Good is celebrating his 40th birthday and having a bit of a mid-life crisis. He has a wife, a mediocre career in plastics, and a house in suburbia... and he's sick of the rat race. He decides to quit his job and "live off the land" in his suburban house. Next door, their friends the Leadbetters are not entirely approving, but they remain...
Today marks 8 years since the first episode of Strike (aka CB Strike) premiered in the UK. Based on JK Rowling's Cormoran Strike detective series (written under the pen name Robert Galbraith), the series has been enormously popular for its complex and well-imagined cases and characters. In the TV adaptation, Tom Burke takes on the role of Cormoran Strike, the war veteran-turned-detective. Holliday Grainger is Robin Ellacott, the talented temp who ultimately becomes his detective partner. At...
