Under the Radar British TV Weekend Recommendations
Published 18 days ago • 3 min read
If the latest British TV releases haven't been enough for you, no worries - this email is meant for you. In it, we'll highlight some British shows and movies you may have missed (or forgotten about), all of which are available to stream in the US.
What we're...
Watching: Uncanny, Season 2 - Based on the popular radio series, this TV series explores seemingly inexplicable phenomena. In each episode, Danny Robins interviews a witness about an eerie encounter, then two experts weigh in—one seeking rational explanations, the other exploring supernatural links. Guests include Caroline Watt, Chris French, Ciarán O'Keeffe, and Evelyn Hollow.
Reading: A Vow of Silence by Veronica Black - One of the great things about ebooks is that, unlike print books, there's very little cost involved in delivering the files - meaning authors with large back catalogues can bundle and sell books very cheaply. I picked up the first 9 Sister Joan novels for $1.99 (price on the morning of March 16th, 2025). The series follows Sister Joan, a woman who walked away from her lover to become a nun in Cornwall - only to find herself mixed up in an improbable number of murder investigations. If you enjoyed shows like Sister Boniface Mysteries, Father Brown, Father Dowling, and Don Matteo, these books are worth checking out.
The Toll (aka Tollbooth)
A man with a criminal past finds refuge working solo shifts at Wales' quietest toll booth. But when his location is revealed, trouble soon follows as old enemies come seeking revenge.
Robson Green embraces the great outdoors in his quest to make weekends count. Exploring the stunning landscapes of North East England, he seeks out people and places that inspire relaxation and renewal. Joined by celebrity guests, family, and friends, Robson dives into activities designed to boost mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
Set in present-day Liverpool and Manchester, this politically charged thriller follows DIs Conil (Sunetra Sarker) and Fleming (Shaun Dooley) as they investigate a gangland shooting linked to a terrorist campaign targeting a mobile phone company. Tied to events from the 2003 Iraq War, the series unfolds across Liverpool, Manchester, and Derbyshire's Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, with each episode focusing on a different character caught in the web of intrigue.
In a remote Scottish village, a young woman's life is shattered by a tragic event just before her lover leaves for war. Set in the Outer Hebrides, this emotional drama explores love, loss, and the strength of a close-knit community.
This legal comedy follows Will Packham, an idealistic pupil barrister determined to do the right thing — for now. His clients are far from innocent, his ruthless mentor Caroline (played by Katherine Parkinson) sees him as a gutless snowflake, and his fellow pupils would do anything to get ahead.
Over two chaotic days, Will must defend a would-be murderer, keep a young slam poet out of custody, and manage Caroline’s endless pastry demands.
This one's not as "under the radar" or forgotten as most on this list, but if you mainly stick with BritBox and Acorn TV, you may have missed it.
Eddie Redmayne stars as a master assassin on a high-stakes mission across Europe, pursued by a determined British intelligence officer. Inspired by Frederick Forsyth's novel, this modern reimagining delivers a fresh take on the classic cat-and-mouse thriller.
This Canadian crime series follows Detective Charlie Hudson and his loyal German Shepherd partner, Rex, as they solve cases in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Inspired by the Austrian-German series Kommissar Rex, the show mixes investigations with the unbreakable bond between man and dog. Starring John Reardon and Diesel vom Burgimwald as Rex.
This adaptation of Laurie Lee's classic memoir brings his WWI-era childhood in the Cotswolds to life. With British TV favourites like Samantha Morton, Timothy Spall, Annette Crosbie, and June Whitfield, the film beautifully captures Lee’s memories of family, rural life, and simpler times.

A few quick notes... Today marks 28 years since the 1997 premiere of Cold Feet. The series follows the lives, relationships, and friendships of three couples in Manchester as they handle the ups and downs of love, family, and career. Originally airing from 1998 to 2003, it returned in 2016 with the same core characters, exploring how their lives had changed over the years. LEAVING - Though BritBox doesn't publish a monthly list of what's leaving, I did happen to notice that Love in a Cold...
If you enjoyed British actor Russell Tovey in shows like Being Human, The Job Lot, Years & Years, and Flesh & Blood, you might be interested to know he also appears in the 2024 Norwegian series The Fortress. The drama is set in the year 2037, and Norway has chosen to sever all ties with the rest of the world. Barricaded in by an enormous wall, they live in a self-sufficient paradise - until a deadly pandemic breaks out, and they realise the wall that kept them safe now holds them as...
If you're already missing Brenda Blethyn's on-screen presence, you'll be pleased to know she has a new project in the works - an upcoming historical comedy called Fools. Starring alongside Jim Broadbent and Karen Gillan, Blethyn will appear in this 16th-century tale about Queen Mary Tudor and her unexpected friendship with her court jester, Jane Foole (played by Patsy Ferran). The film, written and directed by Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered, Drop The Dead Donkey), promises to be a witty and...
