Watching: Dept Q - This one's over on Netflix, and while I honestly didn't love most of the first episode and gave up on it at first, it's worth sticking with it because it gets better. Based on Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen's series, it follows Edinburgh-based detective Carl Morck as he heads up a cold case department of one.
Reading: The Chalk Circle Man by Fred Vargas - This one's French (translated to English), but it's wonderfully quirky and it would make a fantastic French or British TV series. The series follows the unusual Commissaire Adamsberg through a variety of cases, with the first book seeing him investigating a series of blue circles drawn around items in the city - including a corpse.

On BritBox, the 6th brought Bright Young Things and season 2 of Father Ted, followed by Richard Osman's House of Games on the 10th, then season 3 of Father Ted and Ballet Shoes on the 13th. On the 18th, they'll add the first two episodes of Outrageous, a period drama about the Mitford sisters.
On Amazon Prime Video, they added the film Deep Cover on the 12th. This action-comedy stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Kat, an improv teacher wondering if she’s missed her big break – until an undercover cop (Sean Bean) offers her a strange new gig.
On PBS Masterpiece, look for season 10 of Grantchester and Patience on the 15th. Patience is a British adaptation of the French series Astrid et Raphaelle, about a police detective and autistic archivist who work together to solve cases.
On BBC Select, they added Shakespeare: Rise of a Genius, Faces of Evil, and Forces of Nature on the 12th. On the 19th, they'll be adding Joanna Lumley's Danube, Secrets of Britain's Historic Houses & Gardens (S1-2), and In Search of Science.
On Apple TV+, look for season 2 of The Buccaneers on June 18th.
On Netflix, the 20th brings Grenfell: Uncovered, a documentary about the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Today marks 8 years since the first episode of Strike (aka CB Strike) premiered in the UK. Based on JK Rowling's Cormoran Strike detective series (written under the pen name Robert Galbraith), the series has been enormously popular for its complex and well-imagined cases and characters. In the TV adaptation, Tom Burke takes on the role of Cormoran Strike, the war veteran-turned-detective. Holliday Grainger is Robin Ellacott, the talented temp who ultimately becomes his detective partner. At...
A few quick updates before we get into what's new this week... It's been a great few weeks for fans of Edinburgh-based crime dramas - in case you missed the news, both Dept Q (Netflix) and the new Rebus (ViaPlay/BBC) have been renewed for second seasons. A bit further south, the Jersey-based reboot of Bergerac has also been renewed for a second season (even though American viewers are still waiting for the first season). Grantchester may be ending with next year's new season, but those who...
Summers may be slow when it comes to new British TV releases, but the next week or so is going to be one of the best British TV weeks of the year so far. Below, we'll lay out what's in store for this entertainment-packed 9-day period (yes, we cheated a bit)... What we're... Watching: Blue Murder - This is a slightly older series (2003), but Caroline Quentin is brilliant as DCI Janine Lewis, a single mother who balances raising 4 kids and solving particularly difficult cases. Aside from the...
