Tomorrow, the classic British TV series Budgie will be 54 years old! Starring Adam Faith as the charming but hapless petty crook Ronald “Budgie” Bird, the series follows his misadventures as he schemes to make quick cash while constantly finding himself in trouble.
Co-starring Iain Cuthbertson as his boss, Charlie Endell, the show became a cult favorite for its gritty portrayal of London’s criminal underworld - though anyone who's been to London in the last 10 or 15 years might be astonished at the incredible contrast between "gritty 1970s London" and the gritty version of London in modern crime dramas.
It may be old, but it's worth watching even now - both for the good stories and the fact that classic shows are a little bit like time travel.
Fans of the Thursday Murder Club series (coming soon to Netflix) will be pleased to know they've just released a blurb and opened pre-orders for the fifth book in the series, The Impossible Fortune. It's due out on September 30th, just a few weeks after the release of JK Rowling's The Hallmarked Man - so September should be a great month for British mystery lovers.

Watching: The Chelsea Detective - The delightful Adrian Scarborough is back for another season in this Acorn TV Original - and those who enjoy it will be pleased to know we spotted a notice about an upcoming season 4 inside a paid subscription service that helps UK film production workers find opportunities. It listed a shooting date of July 2025, so hopefully that means that by this time next year, we'll have another season to look forward to.
Reading: Nicholas Rhea's Constable Rhea series - This classic series inspired the Heartbeat TV series, and at time of writing (April 8th), you can get the first 10 books in the series for a total of $1.99. The crime series is both cozy and atmospheric, and with 1811 pages for ~2 USD, it's a cheap way to escape the constant, stress-inducing 24-hour news cycle for quite a while.
On BritBox, new episodes of the David Mitchell-led mystery Ludwig continue to arrive on Thursdays. April 1st brought season 17 of Would I Lie To You?, and on the 8th they added season 1 of Hustle (with season 2 to follow on the 15th). Otherwise, it's relatively quiet until the premiere of the Agatha Christie adaptation Towards Zero on the 16th.
On Acorn TV, new episodes of Murdoch Mysteries and Recipes for Love & Murder continue weekly on Mondays. On April 7th, The Chelsea Detective returned for its third season (new episodes weekly for 3 weeks), and they also added the 2018 feature film Red Joan starring Dame Judi Dench and Sophie Cookson. Next week, they'll add the two-part biographical film Hemingway & Callaghan on the 14th.
On Paramount+, MobLand continues to get new episodes on Saturdays. The series stars Pierce Brosnan as Conrad Harrigan, the leader of an organized crime family tangled up within a global crime syndicate. Dame Helen Mirren plays his wife, Maeve. Tom Hardy appears as Harry Da Souza, the family fixer.
On Netflix, April 10th brings season 7 of the satirical anthology Black Mirror.
On Disney+, the new season (they're calling it season 2) of Doctor Who premieres on April 12th, with new episodes weekly through the 31st of May.

Today marks 9 years since the 2016 premiere of the dark comedy Flowers, which starred Olivia Colman and Julian Barratt as heads of the deeply unconventional Flowers family. Set in a rambling, crumbling country house, it follows children’s book author Maurice (Barratt) and music teacher Deborah (Colman) as they navigate depression, dysfunction, and long-buried secrets alongside their eccentric adult twins and a live-in illustrator from Japan. The series blends offbeat humor with emotional...
Before we dive into this week’s British TV news, we want to take a moment to remember actress and screenwriter Jean Marsh, who died on April 13th. In 1971, Marsh co-created Upstairs, Downstairs—a groundbreaking drama that would go on to become one of the most beloved and influential series in British TV history. At a time when women in the UK still couldn’t apply for a mortgage without a male guarantor, Marsh’s achievement (alongside Dame Eileen Atkins) was nothing short of remarkable. She...
Sad news today - British author Peter Lovesey has died at the age of 88. Fans of British crime novels will likely be familiar with his work - particularly the Peter Diamond series, which ended in 2024 with Against the Grain. Lovesey announced in 2023 that it would be the last outing of the Bath-based detective, as his medical issues were terminal and he wouldn't likely live long enough to complete more. In a late 2024 interview, he expressed delight that he was able to live long enough to see...
