Acorn TV March Schedule + This Week in British TV

This week, the classic British comedy Yes Minister turns 45. Originally airing on February 25th of 1980, the series follows Jim Hacker, a well-meaning but often outmaneuvered government minister, as he navigates the bureaucratic maze of Whitehall, constantly thwarted by his wily and manipulative civil servant, Sir Humphrey Appleby.

Fun fact - David Rixon, one-half of the "Footloose Travel" video team, worked on the series as part of the Editorial Department. If you haven't seen the videos he and his wife Debra make, I highly recommend checking them out. Some are offered in full on their YouTube channel, while others are available for purchase or rental on Amazon (for less than the price of a typical movie ticket). My personal favorite? Probably Footloose in Oxford & York - but they're all great, and much more in-depth than most travel shows.

What we're...

  • Watching: American Friends (1991) - Michael Palin (Monty Python) stars in this film about a Victorian-era Oxford professor who visits the Swiss Alps in 1861. There, he meets an American woman and her 18-year-old ward - but when they show up in Oxford a little later, it creates serious problems for his career. The film was based on Palin's real-life great-grandfather, Edward Palin.
  • Reading: The Girl in the Loch by Andrew James Greig - This is another sale find, and it's the first in series about Scottish Private Investigator Teàrlach Paterson. The book was longlisted for the McIlvanney Scottish Crime Book of the Year, and it follows his investigation into the disappearance of a three-year-old girl.

"I just wanted to say well, I suddenly realized, it's all a matter of perception, really. Some of us are dung beetles, some of are butterflies, or a parrot. The thing is, paradise very much what you make it. Or more to the point who you make it with."

This weekend marks 28 years since the premiere of Jonathan Creek, the clever and unconventional mystery series that quickly became a cult favorite. Played by Alan Davies, Creek was a refreshingly quirky addition to the world of British detectives, paired initially with journalist Maddy...

Today marks 15 years since the premiere of Luther, the now-classic British crime drama starring Idris Elba as a morally complex detective who struggles with the darkness of the world and its people. Ruth Wilson plays Alice Morgan, a brilliant but evil woman who enjoys making his life complicated. To celebrate the anniversary, we put together a fun minstrel-style song about Luther, which you can check out HERE. In the US, you can watch Luther on Acorn TV, AMC+, BritBox, Hulu, and Pluto TV...

Today marks 9 years since the 2016 premiere of the dark comedy Flowers, which starred Olivia Colman and Julian Barratt as heads of the deeply unconventional Flowers family. Set in a rambling, crumbling country house, it follows children’s book author Maurice (Barratt) and music teacher Deborah (Colman) as they navigate depression, dysfunction, and long-buried secrets alongside their eccentric adult twins and a live-in illustrator from Japan. The series blends offbeat humor with emotional...
