Brand New British TV in May + Jonathan Creek

This weekend marks 28 years since the premiere of Jonathan Creek, the clever and unconventional mystery series that quickly became a cult favorite. First airing on 10 May 1997, the show introduced us to the brilliant but eccentric Jonathan Creek, a magician’s consultant who used his keen eye for illusion and logic to solve seemingly impossible crimes.

Played by Alan Davies, Creek was a refreshingly quirky addition to the world of British detectives, paired initially with journalist Maddy Magellan, (Caroline Quentin).

With its unusual premise, twisty plots, country house settings, and ingenious solutions, the series stood out as one of the most original mystery shows of its time. Over the years, Jonathan Creek saw changes in sidekicks, tone, and storytelling—but it always celebrated the thrill of figuring out the impossible.

If you've never seen it—or just you just to watch it again—you can check it out HERE on BritBox.

What we're...

  • Watching: Finding You - This 2021 film follows a young woman following in her late brother's footsteps as she travels to a coastal village in Ireland. While pursuing her dream of becoming a violinist, she crosses paths with a famous young actor filming on location—leading to unexpected friendships, personal growth, and a touch of romance against the scenic Irish backdrop.
  • Reading: Desperate Measures by Simon Farrant - I've just started this one after receiving an advance copy from the author, and I was excited to read it since I've never encountered a crime series set in Corby (or anywhere in Northamptonshire that I can think of). When a murder case hits dangerously close to home, DI Suzy Hunter is drawn into a chilling web of crime where love, family, and survival collide. It veers towards the gritty end of the spectrum, so it's best for those who prefer their crime novels a bit less cozy.

Every now and then, we see a few older BBC shows popping up randomly over on Amazon Prime Video - often, shows that either haven't been on other major services or haven't been on them in a long time.
