British TV News: Grantchester, Bergerac, & More
Published 25 days ago • 3 min read
Today, Monty Python & the Holy Grail turns 50! The classic comedy follows King Arthur and his knights as they embark on a hilariously absurd quest to find the Holy Grail, encountering a series of bizarre obstacles along the way.
Starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Sir Michael Palin, it showcases the legendary comedy troupe at their most inventive.
At present, US viewers can watch it on BritBox, Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, Shout TV!, and the Roku Channel.
Watching: Watson - This one's American, but it's an interesting take on the usual Sherlock Holmes adaptations. American Morris Chestnut plays Watson, and it picks up after Holmes's famous demise at Reichenbach Falls. Holmes's will has created a medical clinic for Watson to run, and he spends much of his time unraveling medical mysteries - but there's also an ongoing mystery involving Shinwell Johnson and Moriarty. It's no Sherlock or even Elementary, but it's not a bad show to put on while you're doing something else.
Reading: Lost Among the Living by Simone St. James - I've been on a Simone St. James ghost story kick lately, and while many of her books (like Sun Down Motel) don't fit the theme here, this one is set in 1920s England. Three years after her husband's disappearance, Jo Manders takes a job at his wealthy aunt’s estate, where she uncovers haunting secrets, eerie occurrences, and disturbing truths about her husband’s past.
Grantchester Premiere Date Announced
The US premiere date for season 10 of Grantchester has been announced. The series will return to MASTERPIECE Mystery! on PBS on Sunday, June 15th.
DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and Reverend Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair) continue to work together, and this season sees Alphy settling in - but also, confronting some personal secrets he's been holding back.
Bergerac Renewed
The Bergerac reboot has officially been renewed for a second season, with filming set to take place this summer (2025). The updated series, which follows the iconic Jersey-based detective as he tackles crime on the Channel Island, has been well received in the UK.
While season 1 has yet to premiere in the US, the renewal demonstrates the show's popularity and the enthusiasm surrounding its return.
For those unfamiliar, the original Bergerac aired from 1981 to 1991 and starred John Nettles as Jim Bergerac, a tough, no-nonsense detective working for the Bureau des Étrangers in Jersey. The series became a staple of British crime drama and made Nettles a household name long before his role in Midsomer Murders.
John Nettles also wrote a book about his life in television, including a number of hilarious anecdotes about his Bergerac days.
The BBC has announced the cast for Mint, an eight-part darkly comic Scottish drama created, written, and directed by Charlotte Regan (Scrapper).
Produced by House Productions and Fearless Minds, the series follows Shannon (Emma Laird), the naive and romantic daughter of a powerful Glasgow crime family, as she searches for love while dealing with the dangerous world shaped by her gangster father Dylan (Sam Riley), devoted mother Cat (Laura Fraser), protective older brother Luke (Lewis Gribben), and formidable grandmother Ollie (Lindsay Duncan). When newcomer Arran (Ben Coyle-Larner) enters the scene, Shannon’s pursuit of love and self-discovery takes a dramatic turn.
Filming is currently underway in Glasgow, and the series will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK - no word yet on where American viewers will be able to watch.
Sherlock & Daughter Premiere Date
The CW has announced that the new series Sherlock & Daughter will premiere on Wednesday, April 16, at 9pm ET/PT. Starring English actor David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes and American Blu Hunt as Amelia Rojas, the series follows the legendary detective as he takes on a dangerous case that could risk the lives of his closest friends. Things take an unexpected turn when Amelia, an American woman seeking answers about her murdered mother and a potential connection to Holmes, arrives on the scene.
Together, they set out to solve her mother's murder while unraveling a global conspiracy — and uncovering whether Amelia is truly Sherlock's daughter. The cast also includes Paul Reid, Antonio Aakeel, and Dougray Scott as Moriarty.
No word yet on whether it will appear on a service like BritBox or Netflix at some point in the future (as some British-linked CW shows have done in the past).
"I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"

Today marks 9 years since the 2016 premiere of the dark comedy Flowers, which starred Olivia Colman and Julian Barratt as heads of the deeply unconventional Flowers family. Set in a rambling, crumbling country house, it follows children’s book author Maurice (Barratt) and music teacher Deborah (Colman) as they navigate depression, dysfunction, and long-buried secrets alongside their eccentric adult twins and a live-in illustrator from Japan. The series blends offbeat humor with emotional...
Before we dive into this week’s British TV news, we want to take a moment to remember actress and screenwriter Jean Marsh, who died on April 13th. In 1971, Marsh co-created Upstairs, Downstairs—a groundbreaking drama that would go on to become one of the most beloved and influential series in British TV history. At a time when women in the UK still couldn’t apply for a mortgage without a male guarantor, Marsh’s achievement (alongside Dame Eileen Atkins) was nothing short of remarkable. She...
Sad news today - British author Peter Lovesey has died at the age of 88. Fans of British crime novels will likely be familiar with his work - particularly the Peter Diamond series, which ended in 2024 with Against the Grain. Lovesey announced in 2023 that it would be the last outing of the Bath-based detective, as his medical issues were terminal and he wouldn't likely live long enough to complete more. In a late 2024 interview, he expressed delight that he was able to live long enough to see...
