British TV News: New Emma Thompson, Lynley, Colin Farrell Thriller
Published about 1 month ago • 2 min read
After our last newsletter mentioning the upcoming premiere of Return to Paradise on BritBox (Sept 2), we received a LOT of emails asking about when we could expect the new season of Beyond Paradise.
Unfortunately, we don't have any updates on that right now. BritBox sent over information about August and some upcoming premieres, but unfortunately, nothing about Beyond Paradise. Please remember that we're just a news site - not a production company or streaming service - so we can only pass on the information we get. As soon as we know more, we'll share!
Watching: Dope Girls - This period drama takes place in London's emerging Soho nightclub scene during the early 1900s. It's a far cry from Downton Abbey, but it's an interesting look at the time period. In the US, you can watch it on Hulu.
Reading: A Rock & a Hard Place by JD Kirk - If you like a good Scottish mystery with fun characters, you can always count on JD Kirk - and this latest book is no exception. When an aging rock star is found dead in Smoo Cave, DCI Jack Logan will have to decide if he's ready to return to work (after the tragic events of a previous book in the series).
Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and G.K. Chesterton will be reimagined as sleuthing crime writers in The Detection Club, a new mystery-of-the-week drama from the BBC and BritBox. Inspired by the real-life society of golden age crime authors, the series follows the trio as they solve crimes mirroring those in their books. Filming is expected to begin in the UK’s West Midlands in summer 2026. No word yet on casting, and it's definitely too soon for any premiere details.
Lynley Gets US Premiere Date
Lynley, a four-part BritBox Original reboot of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, premieres in the US and Canada on September 4. Based on Elizabeth George’s bestselling novels, the series stars Leo Suter as aristocratic DI Tommy Lynley and Sofia Barclay as DS Barbara Havers. Created by Steve Thompson (Sherlock), the new drama follows the unlikely detective duo as they solve major crimes while navigating class divides. New episodes drop weekly through September 25.
Apple TV+ Sets Premiere Date for Down Cemetery Road
Apple TV+ will premiere Down Cemetery Road, a new thriller starring Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson, on October 29 with two episodes. Based on Mick Herron’s debut novel, the eight-part series follows a suburban woman and a private investigator who uncover a deadly conspiracy after a girl vanishes in an Oxford explosion. Written by Morwenna Banks and directed by Natalie Bailey, new episodes stream Wednesdays through December 10.
Upcoming Colin Farrell Netflix Thriller
Colin Farrell stars in Ballad of a Small Player, a new Netflix thriller premiering globally on October 29. Based on Lawrence Osborne’s acclaimed novel, the film follows Lord Doyle, a disgraced English lawyer hiding out in Macau whose gambling past catches up with him. Co-starring Fala Chen and Tilda Swinton, the film is directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) and adapted by Rowan Joffe.

This week marks 44 years since the premiere of the classic British sitcom Only Fools & Horses. If you've never seen it, it's one of those shows that every British TV fan should at least try for a couple episodes. David Jason's portrayal of Del Boy is iconic, and the show is a warm, light-hearted portrayal of working-class London in the late twentieth century. Its blend of character-driven humour, emotional depth, and everyday realism helped shape the tone of modern British comedy for decades...
This year marks 50 years since the premiere of one of the UK's greatest sitcoms of all time - The Good Life (aka Good Neighbors in the US). As it opens, Tom Good is celebrating his 40th birthday and having a bit of a mid-life crisis. He has a wife, a mediocre career in plastics, and a house in suburbia... and he's sick of the rat race. He decides to quit his job and "live off the land" in his suburban house. Next door, their friends the Leadbetters are not entirely approving, but they remain...
Today marks 9 years since the premiere of Motherland, a brilliant British comedy about the trials of middle class motherhood in modern England. Created by comedy legend Graham Linehan (Father Ted, IT Crowd, Black Books) alongside Sharon Horgan, Helen Serafinowicz, and Holly Walsh, it continued for three seasons and a couple specials before spawning a spin-off, Amandaland, which is sadly not yet available in the US. All three seasons are available HERE on BritBox. NEWS: Those who've been...
