Signs You've Watched Too Much British TV (+ a Bit of News)

Remember Broadchurch? That delightfully atmospheric coastal mystery with Olivia Colman and David Tennant, the one that still feels relatively recent? It turned 12 today.

I repeat: Broadchurch is 12. Clearly, the pandemic did something weird to time, because it doesn't seem like it came out 12 WHOLE YEARS AGO. But it did.

What we're...

  • Watching: The Angels' Share - This Scottish film is one of several movies added to Acorn TV this week, and it follows a dad who's just dodged a prison sentence. Eager to turn things around, a distillery trip inspires him to seek his second chance in the world of fine whisky.
  • Reading: Only Murders in the Abbey by Beth Cowan-Erskine - This fun Golden Age-style locked-room mystery is set in 1930s Scotland, where housekeeper Mrs. MacBain must solve a murder after a Highland Ball turns deadly. And at least as I'm writing this, it's on sale for 99 cents (7pm Eastern on March 4th).

Madame Blanc Will Return (But Not Yet)

It's been a frustrating few months for fans of Madame Blanc Mysteries. First, there was no Christmas special - at least not in the US. We just looked on as people in the UK enjoyed the festive, murder-y fun. Then, Channel 5 announced that in the UK, season 4 would premiere in March - but it wasn't on Acorn TV's March schedule.

We don't know what caused the delays on this side of the pond, but we do know it's coming eventually. All the usuals are returning, and guest stars for the new season include Lorraine Burroughs (Sweetpea), Charlie Condou (Unforgotten), Richard Blackwood (Typical), Samantha Power (Ackley Bridge), Edward MacLiam (Endeavour), Danny Hatchard (Ridley Road), Graeme Hawley (Ridley).

Rest assured, it will get here. We've gotten a LOT of emails about this one, so we wanted to make sure everyone knew it's coming, but we don't know when and we don't have any control over it because we're just a news site.

Another Maigret

It wasn't that long ago that Mr. Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson, took on the role of Georges Simenon's iconic French detective Jules Maigret in Maigret (2016). Now, there's a new Maigret on the horizon, and this one's going to be a modern adaptation.

Benjamin Wainwright (above) will play Chief Inspector Jules Maigret, and the new version will see him portrayed as a young and unconventional detective with something to prove. It's expected to premiere sometime in the 2025-2026 season on PBS.

Today marks 15 years since the premiere of Luther, the now-classic British crime drama starring Idris Elba as a morally complex detective who struggles with the darkness of the world and its people. Ruth Wilson plays Alice Morgan, a brilliant but evil woman who enjoys making his life complicated. To celebrate the anniversary, we put together a fun minstrel-style song about Luther, which you can check out HERE. In the US, you can watch Luther on Acorn TV, AMC+, BritBox, Hulu, and Pluto TV...

Today marks 9 years since the 2016 premiere of the dark comedy Flowers, which starred Olivia Colman and Julian Barratt as heads of the deeply unconventional Flowers family. Set in a rambling, crumbling country house, it follows children’s book author Maurice (Barratt) and music teacher Deborah (Colman) as they navigate depression, dysfunction, and long-buried secrets alongside their eccentric adult twins and a live-in illustrator from Japan. The series blends offbeat humor with emotional...
