Silent Witness, Beyond Paradise, & a Weekend Watch Guide
Published 6 days ago • 5 min read
First off, big news for those who've been waiting eagerly for more Silent Witness and Beyond Paradise. BritBox has announced premiere dates for both!
Cooler weather always seems to bring out more of the big premieres, so you can rest assured there will be plenty more great new shows to look forward to as autumn rolls in (and not just at BritBox).
What we're...
Watching: Love Rat - This 2024 miniseries follows a newly divorced woman who enjoys a whirlwind romance with a charming hotel proprietor on Cyprus...but it turns out he's not what he seems. Sally Lindsay (Madame Blanc Mysteries) and Neil Morrissey (Good Karma Hospital) star.
Reading: The Final Vow by MW Craven - As a huge fan of the Washington Poe series, I was excited to see book 7 out yesterday, following the hunt for a serial sniper who's taking people out all over Great Britain. If you're new to the series, though, I highly recommend starting with book 1, The Puppet Show, to see the characters develop naturally over time. Tilly Bradshaw, the vaguely autistic genius tech expert, is the best part of the series.

Irish Blood - 2025 - In this six-part mystery drama, Fiona (Alicia Silverstone, Clueless) is a high-powered lawyer whose tough exterior was forged by a childhood betrayal—her father, Declan (Jason O’Mara, The Man in the High Castle), walked out on her and her mother on her tenth birthday, never to return. Or so she believed.
When an unexpected message draws her to Ireland, Fiona is forced to confront the truth about the man she’s spent her life resenting. What she uncovers is a family who never knew she existed and a buried past wrapped in secrecy, deception, and criminal ties. Streaming HERE
Celebrity Escape to the Country - If you find yourself favoring the Escape to the Country episodes with bigger budgets, you'll probably like this celebrity edition of the show (and frankly, if you're not living in the UK it's fairly unlikely you'll know the celebrities, anyway). Follow along as people escape the noise of the city for lovely, idyllic homes in the British countryside. This season includes guests like Cheryl Baker, Christopher Biggins, and Dr. Ranj. Streaming HERE
Love is Blind, Season 2 - This reality series follows UK singles who've signed up to marry someone without ever meeting. Streaming now on Netflix.
Coming Soon...
Sister Boniface Mysteries (Season 4) - AUGUST 19th PREMIERE - The crime-solving nun returns in another season of mysteries set in the picturesque village of Great Slaughter. It’s the mid-1960s, and Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson, Father Brown) continues to assist the local police with her sharp mind and scientific expertise—when she’s not riding her moped or tending to the convent’s winemaking. Catch up on previous seasons HERE.
Great Shows & Films You Might Have Missed
It was a fairly light week in terms of new releases, so if you're struggling to find something to watch, here are a few classics, recent releases, and under-the-radar suggestions that might fit the bill.
Daphne
Daphne - 2007 - This film takes a look back at the life of Rebecca and The Birds author Daphne du Maurier, and how her emotional turmoil and inner struggles with her sexuality shaped her writing. Streaming HERE.
The Gaelic Curse - 2018 - Over the generations, a curse has been handed down from one to the next - until a couple young men decide to change things. Streaming HERE.
Ballykissangel
Ballykissangel - 1996 - When Father Peter Clifford arrives in a small Irish village from Manchester, he has to adapt to the ways of the village. If you've never watched this British-Irish classic, it's definitely worth going back and checking it out. My one caution is that the earlier seasons are the best, so appreciate them while you can. Once you get into it, it's easy to binge and fly right through the best of it (and many find the last couple seasons disappointing). Streaming HERE.
On the Ballykissangel Trail - This short documentary offers a tour of the area where Ballykissangel was filmed, including interviews with stars and fans. Streaming HERE.
Dept Q
Dept Q - 2025 - A brilliant but difficult detective (Matthew Goode) is sidelined to a cold case unit in Edinburgh after a tragic shooting incident. Officially created to tackle unsolved crimes, the unit is more of a PR move—housed in a basement and staffed with officers the department would rather forget. There, he’s joined by a former Syrian police officer (Alexej Manvelov) and a demoted cadet (Leah Byrne), both with something to prove. When a long-forgotten missing persons case starts to unravel, the team finds themselves on the trail of something far bigger than expected. Streaming on Netflix.
Shardlake
Shardlake - 2024 - Based on the late CJ Sansom's Matthew Shardlake Tudor mysteries, this four-part period mystery is set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries. Arthur Hughes (Help) plays Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer sent by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean, Game of Thrones) to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a remote monastery. The story is based on the first novel in the series, Dissolution. Streaming on Hulu.
The Paradise
The Paradise - 2012 - It's a crime that this series only lasted two seasons, because it feels like the sort of show that should have had at least 4 or 5. It follows along as a country girl moves to the city and begins work at England's first department store. Streaming HERE.
The Clothes in the Wardrobe - 1993 - Set in the late 1950s, shy Margaret (Lena Headey) is pushed toward a marriage she doesn’t want—until free-spirited Lili teams with the groom’s mother, Mrs. Monro (Joan Plowright), to derail the wedding from suburban Croydon to sun-drenched Egypt. Features appearances from Julie Walters and Maggie Steed, too. Streaming HERE.
"You want to know how babies are made, Kitty? Well, the bees, you see, like men, visit the flowers. Some bees like just one type of flower, though it turns out not your flower cause your flower just isn't good enough, so there you are, on display, waiting for the big, strong bee with his big pollen sacs underneath him and he goes to a different flower and sometimes, Kitty, the bee only likes other bees, and you think, well, why have you chosen that bee and not my flower? But they don't care, you see? They just buzz around and ignore you!"

Summers may be slow when it comes to new British TV releases, but the next week or so is going to be one of the best British TV weeks of the year so far. Below, we'll lay out what's in store for this entertainment-packed 9-day period (yes, we cheated a bit)... What we're... Watching: Blue Murder - This is a slightly older series (2003), but Caroline Quentin is brilliant as DCI Janine Lewis, a single mother who balances raising 4 kids and solving particularly difficult cases. We've been getting questions for months, but at long last, we have an answer for those of you who've been waiting for the rest of season 3 of Beyond Paradise. BritBox has confirmed that the series will return on October 14th, with 6 hour-long episodes to be released over 6 weeks. Season 3 follows DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and Martha (Sally Bretton) as they balance foster parenting with new challenges—including the return of Martha’s old flame Archie (Jamie Bamber). The Shipton...
Today brings some very interesting news from Cambridge - mainly, the fact that James Norton (Grantchester, Happy Valley) has been spotted on the set where they're filming the final season of Grantchester, which will air next year. Could it be that we'll see him putting in an appearance in the final season? According to Radio Times, there's nothing in the works and it was just a friendly visit...but you never really know until the new season actually airs. It would certainly be nice to know...
